You do not have to take the 8 first. You can take the 8 and the 2 in any order you want.

As far as how to log things, I think I do it a little differently than most people due to the kind of places I deliver to. I go straight from driving to off duty, then back to driving again, in most situations. These are small stores with a dock where it takes a very minimal amount of time to pull into the lot, open the doors, and back into the dock. I don't have to deal with getting through a guardshack, asking questions, and it's pretty common for the shipper to meet me at the truck to come get the paperwork. While being unloaded I am usually out of the truck using the bathroom and walking around the property to stretch my legs. The time working is just flagged, and logging anything on duty would be showing things that aren't really happening. On some of the really hard docks I may show 15 minutes on duty, but this doesn't happen often.

Only exceptions I really use are logging on duty when tailgating the load, and when I have to go to a major warehouse I will show the time I spend working there to swap out trailers and/or deal with security and getting paperwork. But, to be fair, I am home every weekend and always get a 34 reset in, so I almost always have a ton of time on my 70 I could waste and still be within the law.

Technically you did have to log this as On Duty Not Driving, but something got handed down a few years ago that your company can authorize you to use this as off duty time as long as it was in writing. So now the company I was working for at the time just issues this letter out to everyone. Ask your company to do the same. If they need an example, call up MCT or WSE and get the wording that they use. Use this time wisely though and rest.

unless your unloading freight or on the dock, the shipper or reciver allows you to go off duty when they tell you to go back to your truck and they will call you on the cb or come and get you. to me, this is allowing line4 status.

    What was said....

    And I replied with....

So how many carriers have you drove for Dick? Just Swift? I'm happy for you that you are always preplanned! But there are so many companies out there thar do not preplan or even look for loads until they know that truck is available!

Off duty because your company has relieved you of responsibility.

    You are wasting your hours.
