Research trucking companies, get a hold of the CDL handbooks from DMV, and think about the things that you want such as hometime, insurance, etc. And of course, hang out here!

well lilbit you'll be happy to know that last friday i went to the ohio bmv in eaton and got my ohio cdl handbook and have read half of it as of today and really excited bout everything. i goto the job center thurs to see if i qualify for free state aid to pay for my CDL schooling and have been spliting time reading the cdl manual with studying algebra because when you go to the job center they make you take a test and how you score is what qualifies you for certain training, now i know being a truck driver is not the same as a doctor but im proud to be getting into the prfession and am leaning towar hazardous waste after i get driving experience under my belt in a few years. im not bragging im just trying to do all i can to help myself. this is the first thing ive ever went after in my life. thats sad

Getting yourself prepared is great. Glad to hear you are making progress! Sometimes, it takes awhile to figure out what you really want to do. I thought I knew what I wanted to do and was there, my body decided otherwise (bad back and shoulder). Now I have to figure something else out! I've had to figure something else out a couple of times though. It happens.

Well, Scheider is out, as they are concentrating on hiring experienced drivers. Werner is getting guys trained, and then they end up sitting and waiting for weeks for a truck. Don't know much as far as Swift any longer. Check out some of the thread from the 'good company' sections, and look at the later pages of the threads, as that is where the most recent info is.

From what I have seen on here, Millis sounds like a fairly good company. There are some other good ones out there too. Just stay away from CR England. Crete may be worth a look. I know there are some others that are pretty decent for starters, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

you know... i'll never go around saying i know everything but i grew up watching my dad work for roadway and i just thought he was the coolest dad on earth. then i lost my way.. sorta doubted myself the last twenty years lucked out and worked for a hazardous waste company here in ohio which got me in the tractors and loading the tankers and drum trailers, i know it wasnt over the road but it gave me the fever. our drivers were from TSMT ( i miss ya all) and they were all so down to earth. i feel as if i wasted eight years at GM. the money was good but i was never happy like i was hangin out with the drivers or drivin them petes and international around the yard. i hope i found my callin.

Yep, that trainee pay sucks, but that's about the norm. That's only for the approximately 6 weeks that it takes to get through training. Werner does give you the choice of splitting your training, and taking a week paid or going through your whole training in one shot. I will recommend that if you go with them, reserve the decision on how you do that until you see what your first trainer is like. My hubby did that when he went through Werner's training. He got lucky and got a good trainer on the first go, so he did his training in one shot.
