If you live near a Wal-Mart DC I think its a very good job. Ive worked for an outside carrier contracted on to Walmart and have run many walmart loads from the DC to the stores. It’s not terrible but it is a lot of work. 2-3 stores per trip. You need to ring the bell and go inside and confirm the are removing the correct pallets at each store. You need to follow all of the rules at the DC at the guard shack and are subject to some whiny management at some of the stores.

You are given priority once you arrive at the stores so if theres 5 trucks ahead of you when you arrive, you go next. They will actually stop unloading a truck and have him pull out so you dont have to wait but Ive never pushed for that. You can get free snacks at some of the Sams Clubs.

They have good equipment and maintenance and light mechanical and fuel is on site at the DC. They have a lot of overnight reefer loads and parking at stores and at the DC. They have drivers break room and showers at the DCs Ive been to.

I was working for a contracted mega carrier so obviously not making what Walmart drivers make but the Walmart drivers were kinda prima donna-ish some of them, but most of them seemed content. Some of them Ive spoken to said they get the better and less problematic loads.

They couldn’t accept my application at the time because it was a conflict of interest to hire drivers directly from a mega contracted to Walmart which I thought was stupid, because we were already doing the exact same work.

They also have a good amount of daylight loads and those are way better. Dry van general freight. Id assume the drivers with seniority get those and theres a lot of 20 year drivers at Walmart. I may or may not have blown up my clock once or twice to align my hours to better take those trips when they were extremely busy but theyll catch on and get you back on nights.

Always wondered if they slip seat but I think they mostly work 6 days a week.

Walmart cracks me up, when I first got furloughed at the beginning of COVID from my aviation job I was checking out their career site.

Thought I would fill out a profile and see what was available. They were looking for yard drivers and other different jobs as I did not qualify as a driver.

Some of the ridiculous questions companies ask on their assessment test really help me understand why so many companies have gone in the ####ter.

    There were questions like this…

You and Suzanne have worked together for 6 months… Suzanne has never been able to keep up with her work tasks…

    What would you do?

    1) Stop what you are doing even though it may cause you to fall behind in your task and help Suzanne

    2) Talk to Suzanne on break and suggest ways Suzanne can improve

    3) Tell Suzanne she should be fired for falling behind

    4) Tell a supervisor Suzanne is falling behind

Nearly half the questions have the “go tell a supervisor” distractor.

Now a bit of my background. I taught many Walmart aicraft mechanics the mechanical side of the aircraft they owned, I also later taught Walmart pilots even though they trained normally at a different campus. I know some of the Walmart mentality which is a lot of the go tell the supervisor/manager. For example, went to lunch with one of the Walmart gurus of their aviation department. He needed to go to a local Walmart to pick something up. We walk in the entrance and he noticed the front of store has something on the floor. Halt… I need a manager… clean this up now! Wait until it is cleaned up and then let’s go shop. I think it is okay for one company member to look out for other facilities but his approach was very threatening to the manager who did not know anything was out of place. This was a nicer Walmart.

I just don’t know what kind of bullshat rules they would have and for that reason $110k ain’t worth it. Also my wife worked for Walmart years ago. The weird meeting they have at shift change are a no-go for me. I ain’t standing around clapping chanting Walmart over and over.

As an outsider on the inside there was definitely a strong vibe of everyone ratting each other out. The slightest bending of the rules was met with immediate scorn from other drivers.

That DC was 50 miles from the middle of nowhere and Im not sure if it wasn’t referenced in the book hillbilly elegy. The office staff they have to bring people in from hundreds of miles away for a 2 week on 1 week off schedule.

On the contracted side there was your guns ho company men and a larger group of miserable cretins but they were all looking to get brownie points for telling on each other. I did my best to remain mostly unnoticed by the miserable. At least the company men were friendly and helpful backstabbing scum.

Everyone wants to work in the brown trucks. Teaming is rough on your lifestyle.

By letting listen to music while driving, not tracking cell phone calls, no camera right in your butt.
Not making you wear stupid uniform no one by office care about , you know lowering standards :)

    Of course not.

But I read about one incident in particular where a driver pulled over to send a text message. He was in a bad area with no service, and the message didn’t go through until he got a few miles down the road. He got fired for that, because of which Walmart will never rise above “they suck” status in my mind.
