Depends on the brand.

I'm thinking I need a new laptop. This one is 5 years old & has been in the truck since I had it built. It has fallen off of shelves, slid off the bed & bounced around the cab while emergency braking, Been stepped on, & has a good little bit of duct tape holding it together.
I just don't have the time to have one built & knew that walmart sells em. I think they sell accer brand.Civilservant Thanks this. -
If I am not mistaken my son has an Acer. He bought it at Best Buy and he bought a top end model. He took it to Iraq with him. It held up well in extreme heat and general overall abuse. He still uses it and I haven't heard him complain about it, so it must still be running OK for him.
You might want to check out the reviews for the models you are considering:

I just called my son. The Laptop he has is an Asus.

They also sell hp/compaq. You will only get the home edition for the OS unless that is ok for you.

I bought my last two from Best Buy because of their tech support on site, and I think their 3 year extended warranty is a good deal at 180.00.

I just bought an HP from Best Buy. Along with the others mentioned at Wal-mart they also sell Toshiba. I had a Toshiba that lasted for 6 years and the hard drive crashed along with a couple other problems over the years covered by the extened warranty. I couldn't even recover my data.
After looking around I ended up at Best Buy. I wanted a 17.3" screen again so I went with the $799 one. 4 gig ram, 500 gig hard drive, blu-ray drive. I think its in the ad this week for $779. I bought the extended warranty for about $320 for 3 years including accidental damage, which is way more than they used to be. I didn't want it at first but I definetly got my monies worth out of my last one so I added it.

I am running a $375 Walmat Acer computer in the truck bought on Black Thursday in 2007. It has held up great for almost 3 years now. My only complaint about Acer is there is some glitch in the keyboard where sentences will get jumbled sometimes when I type in an email program or a message board. I got my son an Acer laptop last Christmas and it does the same thing. I figure at that price I can replace it every 3 years.

I'm gonna drive down to wal-mart & see what they got. This Compaq I've got was a custom build back in 05. I think the amount of time & the abuse I put it through was worth the price. I'd have another one built, but just don't have the scratch right now after re-caming my truck last week.
