To start with, I absolutely disagree an MC is not the only way to make money.

    For the rest.

Yeah I got that but it seems typical around here, once they get the answer, they call get some recruiter crap and then go and buy the truck only to come back here and act as if they didn't do anything wrong when they are struggling, especially for a company driver.

You always got to start with the basics and move up from there, not at the top and think everything will fall into place.

I know nothing about Jones, but with Landstar you find your loads in their system or work with their brokers, so wouldn't the OP be able to put together profitable lanes in his neck of the woods?

Edited to add:. I think Landstar requires two years OTR experience.

I'd say this applies to 95% of owner operators. Probably more.

Ridgeline, you should no my opinion of people that say your own mc numbers is the only way to make money, I have been leased to the same company over 24 years and make more that most with their own numbers, they just can't believe it's so.

I do own a Ridgeline, if that counts for anything.

Landstar has loads but takes %35 off of the rate. Those big companies are big for a reason; major crooks that takes advantage of hard working people. I've talked to too many Landstar o/os and what they are making is little more than what i have used to make as a company driver. I've heard some good stuff about jones motor but it was 6 years ago. I dont know if they jumped on that crooked train yet. If i were you, i would go with a small company that will show you rate confs and take nothing more than %10.

And yet i know guys at landstar that clear more on one load than most guys with their own numbers clear in a month.

100 percent of cheap freight is not better than 75% of good paying freight. And land star has a good amount of good paying freight. But you will never see it if you think all you got to do is sit back and wait for it to fall in your lap.

Who said i do cheap loads???
You are the perfect example of why those big companies get bigger.
My worst week is better than landstar o/os average week. If you have the patience for making phone calls for your business and if you have simple math skills like dividing/multiplication and a hint of commonsense, you ll do way better on your own.
I guess some of us think that only big companies have good loads, wrong. There is good loads out there, just look for them. Im doing van and my average rate for the year is $1,87.
