Hi, how you guys doing, I m new to the forum and to the trucking, ok so I m a 23 year old and have one more year of school left but my mind is not set on sitting behind the desk for 8 hours, but I would rather sit behind the wheel , I just like to drive and the bigger the more fun for me, I worked for the landscape company for about a year and drove a dump truck I think it was a 18' bed with a trailer to pull bobcat, anyway I don't have my license yet but I ll get in near future don't know when I ll be able to do it thoughi most likley go t through a local school, I would like to get started as o/o, could you guys help me out and explain it how that works exactly, what does it mean to get athourity? , how do you get your loads, what do you guys haul? I m thinking about hauling produce, since everybody needs to eat and I know that produce is needed everyday, the only thing that I m not sure about is when the produce is rejected who pays for that, or anything that I can haul in the reefer but i m not sure yet, haven't really decided on what i want to haul, what would be a good trailer company to get?, what kind of truck should I get, i don't really have my mind set on anything, but I like the new kenworth t660, I know new truck is a lots of money but at the same time, I don't have to worry about breakdown since its under warranty and all, but I know insurance will be higher, I might have more questions later, but I would appreciate what ever you got to say, also if it makes a differense i m located in cali, THANK YOU

before you even think about buyin a truck.....work for someone else for a few years to gain experiance ( will lower your insurance and let you actully sign your truck on with an outfit), if you mess up you wont put yerself into a bankrupcey, and lastly to see if you even like driving 10,000 miles a month or 120,000 miles a year.....alot get into it and find out they arent cut out to drive a big truck

If you are serious about getting into trucking start as a company driver and save some money then think about all the cost of owning one there is a lot of things to consider fuel insurence authority is the least you can lease on with a company and run there authority but its not all cake and ice cream its hard starting out and owning one doesent make it easier I have 3 and everyday think to myself WHY.You work for a company for a little while and think about it hard before you make that leap youll know when its rite we all did.

Sebo, fallinangel is right, listen to both of the poster's. While you're driving the company truck keep track of all your expenses while driving the truck. Pay attention to fuel cost, any repairs you have done on the road. Depends on the company you chose to work for as to how much you will be able to find out about expenses, some of the bigger companies you may not find out as much but ask any questions you can about expenses when you go to work for them. I am like you in regard's to driving. Have been doing it for twenty years, six as an o/o and i still love the job. Do not go for the lease purchase !!!!! It is just as easy to do some research and find a good used truck to purchase on your own and you have more control over it. As for warranty on a new truck, the warranty does not pay for down time, and sometimes you can have as much down time with a new truck as you do with used. Find a good used truck with less than 500000 on it when you are ready for the step from company driver to o/o and you will be fine. Good luck.
