First post here, been reading quite a bit.......Seems like you guys are a good group:biggrin_2559:....

Im 33 and thinking of jumping into obtaining my CDL A.....Im ideally hoping on finding a decent place where I can obtain my license and have a 12month or under commitment to pay for the schooling and fees.......

Ive had a few jobs, my last job was a great 5 year stint in a metal (copper) plant where i started out in a foundry casting 14,000lb slabs of metal. It was Hot and long hard hours......

I moved up the laddder pretty quick, and in the 5 years had held 6 different positions, voted in as shop steward (It was a union shop) eventually became union VP, and had an environmental assistant desk job toward the end..........

Well it all came to a screeching hault when the co. decided to shut the doors..........yeah it was real awkward having the CEO tell me as the VP, I have to let my guys know the mill was shutting its doors.......

Well its been two years since then, and I am having a hard way to go finding decent work.

I have some college education, and am not afraid to WORK.....

I wanted to go for my CDL after high school, .....you know how that goes:smt120

Now im seriously considering making the leap, I'm happily married with the MOST understanding wife ever, and a beautiful 15month old daughter......

I figure the sooner I give it a go the less chance I will miss things when my daughters older ( the faster I can hopefully land a local job).....

I was thinking of CRST, as they would pay mostly upfront for everything, and Id have to ROll for them for 8 months.....

My cousin did a refresher for SWIFT out of Syracuse, and had a decent experience.........

I was leaning toward those two places to start out and put some time in.....

Im not a complainer I know you have to start at the bottom, and #### sucks at first....But its a foot in the door. Im not afraid to work crazy hours, in fact I love it....I use to do 112 hours a week in a foundry, so im not shy to work LOL........

Im also one of those night owls who only require 4-5 hours of sleep and I feel Good.

What would some of you recommend for a situation like this?.....I appreciate all and any input given ( be it what I want to hear or not LOL)
    :biggrin_25525:

    Sorry for the long Post..........NOTCH:biggrin_25525:

Ps...Im not sure if this should go here, or in the introduction section.....

Have you looked at the community college route? I highly recommend it, being free and clear of a company has lots of benefits. In the end you'll have to make the best choice for you and your family. Good luck with your new career.

    Hello, Redsoxvw:)

    Welcome to the Site!!!!

If you are unemployed you could qualify for free funding for training through the WIA program. This would be offered through your local Employment Security Commission (ESC). This program is designed to help you to get trained for many vocations including truck driving.
If you can get the school funding, then you could pick and choose which company you want to go to work for. Don't be a victim of trucking. Do your homework and stay on top of your success.

Keep us posted as to your progress.

    Best of Luck

you don't need your cdl to get in the program. you work the dock while going through the process. search the warehouse jobs, that's where they post "driver apprentice" jobs. So your getting paid to learn. Can't beat it. plus they reimburse you for the hazmat
