Dig through the trucking magazines and try to find the ads about the free information kit on getting your own authority. Kevin Rutherford actually discourages getting your own authority and instead find a company to lease onto. You'll need several thousand for a down payment on a truck, $550 for your 2290, and of course your insurance. Non-trucking liability and physical damage. Most carriers will have their own cargo and primary liability, so you don't need to worry about that if you lease. Most carriers also offer free base plates and permits or at least deduct to help you pay for them. At the very least you should learn how to shop for a truck. If you really love W900s, don't expect to get great fuel economy. How about you learn how to drive first before you get your own truck?
Brokers suck! If you really really really want to have your own authority(personally I think its suicide), only half of your revenue should come from load boards and brokers. Company drivers and leased drivers get paid every week or other week. Want to wait between a month to who knows how long to collect from a customer?

1) you do have a CDL right?
2) has dad taken you with him and taught you any ropes through the years
3) you can do your own maint. on a truck should you decide to buy one?
4)you have enough cash saved up to run say 2-4 weeks preff 4 weeks till you get a good cash flow w/o getting cash advances on every load?
5)have you figured cost like IRS taxes into your budget. Wait you do have a budget don't you
6) last year I grossed apx 170+ thou I paid IRS 15 thou quarterly abt $3800
and it gets ugly quick if you do not make them extimates.
7) yes the 2290 are ready for filling $550.00
8) also you need the money for partial year base plate could be $900/up
This is not like buyng a car getting ins and plates fueling and go there is allot to trucking. You have allot of questions here from a man who has a trucking father that makes me wonder are you really ready for all of this?
There is no sham in starting out much smaller getting exp getting to know the industry and then get into this. Start out w/maybe driving a dump truck this is a good way to learn and get your bearings. This is no economy for someone to start out in green. Think hard and do the math first. OH and the W-9 makes my heart go pitter patter for sure but it is like driving a box in the wind and at todays fuel cost you can't afford that. We own a 98-T-2000 and bought it new in 97. Bought a new T-600 in 93 I think and it paid for itself in fuel savings alone over what the 82 freightliner conv had done. Looks are one thing but a todays fuel prices you have to have an edge.
Baack Thanks this. -
