Just recently received my CDL in August, been working for a good OTR company. I have a wife and kids and the goal is to become more local and I have assumed that I needed more experience to get those jobs. Any ideas for my family and I? (I am from Des Moines, IA)

You may as well state where you live, city and state, because you are going to be asked. It makes a difference as it relates to companies that will be recommended to you.

Check out some local LTL companies. However, at my terminal, P&D drivers start anywhere from 5am-10am and can be out for 12 hours.

Line haul or maybe tanker yanker is about the only thing in trucking where you can have a set schedule like that.

Food service or soda (stay away from beer, seems like everyone reports that the pay is pretty crappy, but I have no experience with beer so I only go on what I hear)

I was going to say food service also. Those guy start like 3am and are home by 3pm. It hard work you hand unload truck deliver food to resturesta and fast food places. I always hear they pay good. Your more of unloading/delivery guy and then drive the truck second.

Check into drayage/container companies in your area. I run containers in the Cincinnati area, and on a schedule exactly what you want. I start at 4/5am, and am usually home by 2-5pm

There are several big carriers that are in the business; JB Hunt, Swift, Schneider, etc. Check who you have in the area

Being home and resting will be the two biggest problems. Even if you lived alone, you get home when you get home subject to dispatcher calling you 5 hours into your sleep time. And you have to leave the house EARLY because it is NOT your schedule. It is determined by where you need to be with that tractor trailer however far or near.

Having babies and OTR does not mix. Your spouse will eventually get mean thinking you are traveling the USA free from diaper changes and so on and you wont be married too long among other problems like Child Support which in this Nation has the power to strip your CDL for not paying.

I hate to be difficult but you think you go home when you want to... That's simply not going to happen. You will get home when you get there and leave out much sooner than you plan on. With a second or more persons inside the home, it is absolute needed to have a dedicated sleep room just for you. No one enter unless the place is burning down. Otherwise you WILL NEVER get rested at home. It's even worse with children etc. With my family, when I got home the first thing I did is go into my cave and get the sleep solved. Once done with that then I can participate until it's time to go.
