I think the OP knows all that and that's why they are asking about local stuff. I dragged a line haul for a while from Milw. to Madison twice a night. Incredibly boring, but it was about the closest thing to a "regular" schedule as one could get.

I was a local truck driver for 7 months in Las Vegas. Local jobs are the best jobs for company drivers as you get paid for “everything” you do, and they are not kidding. You’re waiting for a dock, you’re getting paid. You’re filling out paperwork, you’re getting paid.

I recommend to have—at least—6 months experience before attempting to transition to a local job, AND two months of savings. You want to be in the position to reject bad job offers. Most job offers are trash. If you fill out an application and get a call the next day, that’s a red flag. It may take you 1-2 months to land a good local job. However, you may have to work for a good small local company for 6-12 months before getting into the best and biggest local companies like Sysco, US Foods, Core Mark, etc.

Stay away from companies handling heavy cases such as Coca-Cola. There are many reports of serious back pains after years of doing that job.

When you receive a call, have a list of questions for them. A lot of times what they put on the job description is not accurate. Also, speak to actual local drivers in your city for an accurate description of the job. Big companies don’t always function the same from city to city.

Local companies in Las Vegas appear to begin mostly in the early morning (1am-6am). Las Vegas companies like Sysco and US Foods have drivers work 4 days a week. Each day is 10-14 hours long. They are allowed to work overtime by adding themselves to the overtime list. They give them a call if they need someone. Alcohol companies in Vegas pay the most at about $28 an hour. There are two that I know of. One allows overtime, and the other one doesn’t. It’s important to note that overtime is how local drivers can make very good money (60-80k). Without it, they will only make about 50k at $23 an hour.

Actually, that’s not true. Spent many years in the beverage industry- in many different aspects of it, including claims. Back injuries are pretty low for drivers. It’s mostly shoulders, wrists, and knees. Believe it or not, there are more claims of back injuries from the office personnel than the drivers.

You’re general point that it’s a rough gig, and tough on your body is not only fair, but accurate, just not about the back. Other parts of the body.

I think it may have to do with how the local company pays drivers. The Coca-Cola in Las Vegas, according to a local driver I spoke to (and if I recall correctly), pays drivers extra if they deliver more than a determined number of cases. So they get paid hourly rate, plus the cases they deliver. Drivers being paid this way may be at a higher likelyhood of cutting corners when it comes to lifting cases appropriately in order to increase their pay. To make things worse, their cases are mostly heavy.

This same driver also told me that he knows of several drivers from his company that required back surgeries after years of doing that work.

I know someone whose father developed serious back problems many years after he stopped working as a furniture/appliance mover. This is the reason why I don’t recommend people to work for local companies handling heavy cases. I handled produce as a local driver and most cases were light. The heavy cases were bags of potatoes/onions, melons, watermelons, etc.
