Good evening everybody,
I'm about to retire from the military and thinking of starting a second career. I'm thinking about buying a truck and leasing on under my brother's authority and hiring a driver (I have a dependable guy in mind). I've even considered going to school and driving for a company for a year or so and then going the O/O route. But I have kids and after 22 years in the military....I want to be at home as much as possible.
I'm searching the forum and getting info but curious what you all think about going into the business and not actually driving. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Want to buy a truck but don't want to drive

I considered putting someone in my truck when I bought it. I still had company job and had someone dependable in mind. A nugget a old timer gave me was know the job yourself before you put someone in it. If you have someone you can trust watching over your truck and able to keep close eye on it, and they know exactly how truck should be ran then I say go for it. You don't want somebody else in charge of your investment and don't know all the ins and outs yourself.

Thanks for the input. That's exactly why I'm thinking of going to school and driving for a while to learn the ins and outs. But I can trust my brother to keep me on the right path; but I hate depending on others (even my big bro).

You will most likely end up driving it yourself so go ahead and get your CDL.

If you r going to own a truck you should at least have a license to drive it , to example what happens if something happens to the dependable one , or they need vacation or ? I don't think it would require a years investment in someone else's company though just get cdl and truck and go for it , maybe buy two, keep one running full time and run the other as needed. Just my .02

One truck will not support 2 households. You should invest in rental properties the headaches would be a lot less expensive. Maybe some fleet owners will chime in how many trucks it takes to kick back, enjoy the sun, money and still get random 3am phone calls when things go south. If you ain't gonna drive it yourself it'll drive you to ruin.

-You have to keep insurance on it.
-You have to have a place to park it if you can't park at your home and this will set you back anywhere from $70-$400/mo. depending where you live
-You need freight... with no experience yourself its a pain and with someone else driving under your authority its an even riskier deal for brokers.
-DOT targets independents like my fly swatter targets mosquitoes.
-It takes about 60 days for any income to start rolling in... you'll need to account for that
-Then there's obviously fuel, by the time you see your first check you'll spend about $10,000 on that
-If your buddy is driving you'll probably have to pay him (long before you get paid)
-You'll need permits.
-You'll need a down payment and enough saved to cover your first few months.
-You'll need a cheap repair guy, might be a good idea to learn how to do this on your own.
-Even when the truck isn't running it can break down, especially in the winter.
-By not driving it yourself your income is totally dependent on this other guy's work ethic.
Just some food for thought... probably a lot of stuff I missed.I.F. Trucking Thanks this. -
I really appreciate the advise guys. I still have a year in the military before I retire. I'm a big fan of delayed gratification. So I'm ready to suffer for awhile. The goal is to eventually have a small fleet.
Again. Thanks for the input -
How do you make a million in trucking start with two ... Is a old saying best to know the ins and outs before investing too heavy
