Greetings,I wanted to purchase a dump truck at first initially & start up a business. Now I'm starting to think bigger an I'm considering getting a semi truck instead, however I don't want to go over the road. What can I do locally with a semi truck? Also what should I look forward to spending up front(do I need to buy trailer/dump trailer)? Should I get a day cab or sleeper cab? I'm open to all advice and ideas, however going over the road is out the question,I need to be home every night. There is so many options out there as far as trucks go aswell so it's really confusing.

I may regret this but here goes...
Have you driven already and have a commercial license?
How many years experience do you have?
    Where do you live?

Im not saying this wrong but, I would start with a little more of a plan than I want to get in the trucking business. I will buy a dump truck no I will buy a tractor?. What should I do with it if I buy a tractor?

At breakfast this morning the place looked really cool and the food was good. I think I want to buy a restaurant. I can only work days at this restaurant though, it can’t take up too much of my time. Anybody know a good restaurant forum where they’ll tell me everything I need to do to make the big monies?

What area do you live in?

Here in Colorado I've had a harder time finding local work for my semi with trailer. I haul water for a company in the summer and have a Step deck. The best paying step deck loads require me to be on the road for a night or two usually.

Dump truck work is busy around here. My buddy says hes a little slower right now but still works 3+ days a week. Pay for a tandem is $80-$85 an hour.

If you don't have experience in this industry then do your research. The expenses in this business are big! Insurance for a start up with a new CDL can be unaffordable.

yeah, aggregates is about the only thing that will keep you local. You can do truck/trailer or 10 wheeler. Asphalt pays good. Get state funded jobs if possible. Also be advised, sometimes you need to go out of town for work.

To the OP: WHY do you want to get into a business like this? Why trucking? What do you know about trucks, and trucking? Do you have a network of contacts?

Have you done any research other than this post? It doesn't really sound like you have. Perhaps a tad more research and planning might be in order, and as a start, might I suggest browsing these very forums? If you can wade through and filter the smartassedness, the attitudes, and the occasional hostility, there's a gold mine of very very good information here, from some very experienced (and good, helpful) trucking industry types.

If you buy a dump truck you will need a tag trailer, excavator, bob cat etc etc, and a big mound of dirt, those are the only guy making money with dump trucks.

have you ever put a dump trailer up in the air? There’s 3 ways to unload them but only 1 way (out the back) really works....
