From 2nd paragraph of the 13-page review:

"Nearly 15 million truck drivers who traverse the continental United States are particularly susceptible to a wide array of occupationally induced health conditions, exemplified by high morbidity and mortality rates(Saltzman & Belzer, 2007)"

    And goes on:

"One particularly startling statistic underscores the gravity of the situation: life expectancy is only 63 years for U.S. male unionized truckers and 55.7 years for members of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association—both significantly lower than the 75.1 years for the general U.S. male population (Heron et al., 2009; Saltzman & Belzer, 2007)" [Emphasis added.]

The problem isn't just long hours and low pay. The statistic Gordon gave out at Orientation was 61-year life expectancy for OTR drivers.

    Well, Vic.
Here's a little cold water for ya.

Fair pay is in the eye of the beholder.
What you think is fair may not be to others.

Its not for you to decide what is fair to all, only you can and should be deciding for yourself.

What others make is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

Why should a company pay higher for drivers, when they have 100% turnover? They have a fresh crop of newbies coming in their door everyday.
The MARKET dictates what a company will and can pay.
Not You, nor the government (thank GOD).

The Health of a driver is up to the driver to maintain, not the government. So keep beating that dead horse, Vic. Its still up to the markets to determine what a company can pay. And, its up tot he drivers to maintain a healthy balance.
The drivers are not forced into this. Many of them may come in with eyes closed, but they soon realize, this isn't what they thought it would be. Thus they leave for something else, and we are left with a market driven economy. This is a fundamental element of the Capitalist economy that we have here in America.

If you can't stand that, move to Sweden with Joe.

Have you noticed on the one hand, truckers kind of avoid each other. And if you do start talking with another driver, he/she may not stop talking... ?

The review states that among Australian long-haul truck drivers, suicide caused 1 in 10 deaths... and the 4th most cause of death of drivers younger than 36-years.

    $400-$600/wk 80-100 hr. 7-day week. That's gross, before taxes.

Feeling a little 'twitchy'?? You may just be a little twitchy, driver. Not only that:

Makes me tired just thinking about it all, too.

The meaning of 'worksite-induced' is that you play the game, receive the pain. It's not optional or avoidable. Confinement, isolation, vibration, noise, diesel fumes are like sand down an engine... it's just a matter of time and quantity. Drive xxx thousand miles and you incur the associated injuries to your body, overall health and life expectancy.

But some will argue your 'right' to die early of work-induced aggravation and oppose, belittle advocacy for improved working conditions, pay.

    Don't-change-nuthin'-ers.

Keep beating that dead horse, Vic.

It doesn't change the responsibility of the driver, to keep themselves in shape.
    It's not anyone elses responsibility.

Here's a correction. That '15 million truck drivers' was wrong. The original authors left out a decimal point. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 1.6 million truck driving jobs in the United States, not 15 million.

Hey, i see you're from not far from me and was wondering who you would recommend as a company to get a fair shake from?
I'm no stranger to working for my money and am planning to go to roadmaster tampa next month.
Currently My top pick is Prime, Inc because they have 3 FL terminals, and their pay seems to be the best for new long haul drivers. but I'm not opposed to going out of state, I'm 27, single and have no kids.

any advice you could offer would be appreciated.
