Were you the Conway going 40 mph in a 70 with your flashers on because the roads were wet on Tuesday?

Just to add some color... When Con-Way pays an employee $55,375, they also pay the following in benefits:
$1,065 - vacation
$1,938 - retirement
$2,304 - health insurance (estimated based on comparable 'bronze' plan --$244/month-- less $12/week employee contribution)
$4,476 - worker's comp (estimated based on trucking industry quote)
plus $4,236 in FICA
...So they pay $69,374 to give you $55,375 (and I'm probably missing some costs too).
Just something to think about (especially for those considering becoming an "independent" contractor).frankgh, Swamprat55 and misterG Thank this. -
DY, are you saying the pay you posted was post tax? I assumed it was gross not net.

Something that Surfer is neglecting.
This job (trucking), as he's finding out. Isn't for everyone.paul_4lp, frankgh and double yellow Thank this. -

Therefore, your gross pay was $69,374, as would be the total on your W2's?
And, to the best of my knowledge, workers comp is paid 100% by the employer, not the employee and is required by federal law which applies to any and all employers.
I wouldn't consider workers comp as a "benefit".
BTW, ( here's a cute little Obamacare tidbit) that "Bronze" plan for $244.00 a month doesn't pay any benefits whatsoever until the deductible of $6000.00 is paid in full by the insured.Last edited: Feb 17, 2014

There is a difference.
Of only about $13,999.00.
Come on, man! -
Because of tenderhearted fools convincingly arguing for individual sacrafice for the collective good, I received only 55k of the 69k that Con-way paid. Actually 51k because of that 55k, I had to pay an additional 4+k in FICA (on top of the 4+k conway paid)
Now I'd rather have that 18,000 in hard cash. I think most people would. That's what Conway would have paid me in a free market...
The evaporation of that 18k is just what happens when we cover the cost of every lifelong disability so jumping jimmy can egress using 0 points of contact & we force squandering sam to invest 12+% of his income into a government retirement plan he may not even live to see.
The lesson is to be doubly, nay triply shy of anyone suggesting that they have a plan to protect workers from their employers (& themselves).misterG, frankgh and CargoWahgo Thank this. -
Joe, I want to thank you for starting this thread! Without you, I might not have joined the Conway team!
paul_4lp, CargoWahgo and double yellow Thank this. -
