Trying to get on with Schneider. I have my CDL and medical card. Going through lots of hoops related to a hernia surgery on feb 7 (Probably shouldn't have told them about it). I don't understand this. Schneider contracts a company to gather info and tell Schneider I am ok to drive. But the final sayso is from the 'DOT Medical Examiner'? Why the extra step? I now have to go back to get an ok from a cardiologist about a wierd heartbeat thing to say I am ok. In the paperwork the medical team already has both of my doctors say that I can drive by FMCSA standards. It makes no sense.

This is normal in the industry. You can have 5 valid "medical cards" from DOT doctors but the carrier wants their own medical clearance performed on ALL new applicants. There are plenty of drivers who would scam a carrier if they'd let them get away with it, so that's why the carrier wants to see a "fresh" physical performed by a doctor/office they are familiar with.

Schneider, like alot of larger companies is self insured. They can decide what medical conditions they wish to clairify before hire. Many times a driver is handed their medical card without doing anything more than breathing for the person doing the "physical". You are being asked to drive equipment and haul loads worth thousands of dollars. Just making sure you are able to handle the job and reduce liability to the public.

Had a company DOT Examiner argue with my family Dr., the man I've been seeing for 30 yrs, about my overall medical health this past week. I'm diabetic, controlled by diet and exercise, and BP meds. Just got my new DOT this past Monday, and interviewed with this company on Wednesday and went to their Dr. on Thursday. Their Dr. is claiming my A1C test is high enough I should be on diabetic drugs, family Dr. is telling him absolutely not, I show absolutely no signs or symptoms, other than the A1C being high that would indicate I need anything else but my current treatment. My Dr. has been in practice for 34 yrs, and a DOT/FAA Flight physician for 25 yrs, this companies Dr. has only been practicing about 8 yrs. The two talked Friday morning, I called the company Friday afternoon and declined the job, I don't like their Dr..

What type of hernia did you have corrected?

This matters because there is a problem with the FMCSA medical standards and the types are not defined well. A friend went through the entire big PIA with a company doc seeing all his medical records, having to deal with the doc's "determination" that I was unfit and so on, while holding a commercial pilots license, going through that physical process and then having another physical with both the Navy docs for his reserve functions and his own doc - all of them said he is more than fit to drive.

I think there are two issues with the FMCSA having to "register" doctors to give physicals, one is the company should not have the right to reexamine someone if they can take the physical outside of the company but the other is who is better fit to judge the fitness of the driver, the company doc who doesn't know more than what is on the long form or the family or GP doc who sees the patient more than once in their lives.

We have a couple of drivers that have pacemakers due to heart issues. It isnt always a disqualifier.

stexan is correct. With all companies you still have to do a another physical for them and their insurance companies require it.At least that's what a company told me.Also make sure to bring all the needed paperwork with you saying you can drive.Just incase Schneider wants to make a copy of it.Even though schneider is gathering everything saying you can drive, companies are funny that way and may say they have no proof or whatever.Just come prepared is all im saying.
