For a few years now I have been seriously considering moving out of Texas. I have been in love with western Montana since first visiting with my grandfather as a kid. I also like Alaska, at least what I have seen while delivering to Anchorage and Fairbanks.

My concern and the basis of my question is whether or not there is any work in these places? My wife is a professional chef and is concerned about whether or not she could find a rewarding career that would maybe offer a btter salary and/or working environment than what she currently has. She would like to find something with a salary of around 40k per year. She currently does catering, banquets, and other events.

I guess my question is if these places still have a strong economy or are they struggling to swim like everyone else?

I used to live in Alaska just moved to CA a few years ago. The economy is slowing down some but not at the same rate as the rest of the country. If you are a driver there are still good jobs for you. If you can get on with the oil field even better. As far as your wife is concerned there are jobs available for her also. Try looking into the tourist companies they pay decent. Also the hotels in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau will pay more as will the reastaraunts. Can say much about the working conditions as I have never worked for them.

We've been considering moving to Montana as well. Upon further research there seems to be quite a bit of driving jobs and I would think finding a job for your wife should be pretty easy too. Lots of tourist destinations in Montana. The Montana economy is fairing pretty well in comparison with the bulk of states.

We've decided to purchase some land outside Missoula as our first step. Then build on it in a couple of years. Now its just finding the right piece of property. I don't want to be able to see my neighbors...LOL!

I know this may seem weird, but in the back of the current edition of Mother Earth News there are several properties with 10+ acres with a house for 40-60k. Might help, I dunno.

Yeah, we've looked at several so far. None of them have felt right yet. We know the land will speak to us when we find it and yes I know that sounds hokey. :biggrin_255:
