Hi all!
I've always admired truck drivers, and thought about pursuing a truck driving career before I had children. Now, I have two little boys and am considering it again. The problem is, I cannot leave for or afford truck driving school. Nor can I do OTR driving. I just can't leave my boys, I have no one to watch them. I can pass the written test for my CDL, no problem but I've never been behind the wheel. Can I find a company to train me once I acquire my learners permit? And is it possible to find a company that will keep me home? Am I wasting my time or is this a possibility? I'm located in Central Indiana if that matters.
Thanks!
Wanting to obtain my Class A. Is this possible?

Yes, yes, yes. But your gonna have to think outside the box. Roll off, trash, dump truck excc.. best bet is a company that has both A and B trucks. Go in for a B truck with a cdl A. Tell them you would be willing to move to a A truck should they be willing. Build your experance, and trust with a good comapny and you might get a A truck. If not alot of B local work is pretty good pay wise. Just gotta look. And dont do anything illigel just cuz your new and trying to impress, you #### up, you lose job, you are ####ed.

Thank you both for your input!
So I should get my class A but start driving B trucks to get in the door? I have zero problem with very physical work. I prefer it, actually.
I doubt that I would qualify for any government assistance, but I suppose It wouldn't hurt to inquire. Is it preferred by companies that new drivers attend driving school? How else could one get behind the wheel without it? -
Well i like pintles idea of vev companys, as for how else, its a permit, so just like a car. Getting a B job with a CDL A good way to get in, depending on where you live there are companys that will train and rent trucks for the test. In mn if your a quick study you can get a A for less then 600 all in. A cdl B is like 450 but then you have to talk your way in the door excc. If a bev company will hire you and train i would do that. Stay put for at least a year AFTER you get your cdl, then go looking.
Brandi Thanks this. -
Not sure what the policy is in your location, but they pay for your training up here for Bus drivers! Pretty easy way to get your Cdl B with airbrake, School bus and Passenger endorsements. Some Schools will let Drivers take their kids with them on the runs. Just another option.
