If it doesn't have rust, its worth a replacement engine but not at 7 thousand.

Waiiiiit a sec, a new engine in August? Of this year? And who did the work won't honor any kind of warranty? That truck would be encased in their front window. Am I missing something here? Not sure what a "fallen piston" is, more likely, dropped a valve or a timing issue. Regardless, another truck is out of the question, and as said, if it's not rusty, like trucking, fix it and cry later. I'm sure it's still a good truck and you hate to "shoot" it. Get a reputable shop, if any, that will give at least a year.

Not just that but was it taken in and looked at by the installer when it started pinging? May have wasted an engine over something that could be fixed..

Me personally would be happy to have one like that if no rust. I would get an engine from the local wrecker yard and have it running by the end of the day. Then if really solid open up and inspect the blown one. If its not one of those poorly rebuilt ones, it would get rebuilt or replaced with an other from the wrecker and that one would get rebuilt properly. I would still come in way less than 7 k and most likely have 2 running motors.
I know not everyone has the tools or is set up for what I am but even buying tools from harbor freight and doing the swap with a friend on days off wouldn't cost 7 k. Most likely 2 guys with basic knowledge could do it in a day.

I'm going to take my truck back to the shop that installed the engine.

When shipping a vehicle that does not run, it gets a higher rate as it takes a roll back and/or a winch to load it

Did you ever get your truck fixed?
I do my own wrenching but I always worry about breaking down far from home with no tools and having to ship a vehicle back home '
Especially when I am driving it in another country

I found that out, yes. It does run, but barely.
