If your running lo pro rubber, switching to tall will give you 3-4 more mph at same rpm. If you go from 22.5 lo pro to 11r 24.5,it will be 6-7 mph. Just another option.

So, I just changed trany and clutch. Reman 10 gear eaton fuller and a new clutch cost me almost 7 grand with labor. My mechenik told me that there is no sense to swap from 10 to 13 gear. To install the 13 gear trany I had to change the drivrshaft, install the oil cooler, and make some changes with my exhaust system. Cause on my T2000 it goes too close to trany. And there is no room to install the oil cooler over there. He told me it will cost around 10-11 grand. Sounds to expansive for me

True the 13 is a longer transmission. You will have to shorten the driveshaft but the one you have can be shortened to do the trick. Only about 3 inches or so. The only difference is the auxiliary section. As the T2000 came OEM with that trans it should fit right up no modification needed unless someone changed something around after purchase. The existing new clutch will work no need to replace. And companies like Weller will take your transmission as core, or maybe a reduced core credit. As for a cooler there are a number of ways to do it. One is an OEM style heat exchanger typical on PACCAR trucks. Mounts to top cover needs a coolant line in and a return. 2 hoses 4 clamps and some pclamps or zipties to secure. Other is an air cooler to front of truck mounted by radiator. Other is cooler by driver side under cab as some mid to late 90s KW had. I'm going out on a limb and going to say you mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about. Probably above his skill level. Sometimes thinking outside the box is above a lot of peoples skill level. The only extra you should have paid is the cost differential between a 10 and a 13 SPD and shortening the driveshaft. Maybe the rear bearing cover and seam depending on what speed sensor you require
Phvbk Thanks this. -
I would avoid a water to oil heat exchanger if at all possible. I have seen way to many leak internally. Thus mixing your transmission oil and engine coolant. Not good and can potentially be very expensive.

Or just don't run a cooler. Unless your grossing over 100,000 in lots hills they really aren't needed.

An 8LL is way better than a 10 speed for off road and having overdrive on the highway.
You have to get the 8LL with over drive though or else you'll be strung out just like a 10 Speed on the highway wasting diesel fuel.
It has double Low 1 thru 5 for off rd or maybe you have pull in a steep drive somewhere or back in.
Flip out of low and you shift it like an 8 speed but 7th is equal in highway speed to 10th in a 10 speed.
Our Pete dump will do 72 mph with the pedal on the floor in 10th. That will burn up some fuel trucking it down the interstate empty to get back to the loader.
The KW T-800 with a C13 and 8LL
that I drive will do close to 90 mph in 8th and final gear.
Another cool trick. Far left and back is low not considered 1st.
To keep from going into low to pull off on steep grades I can flip 1st into low range to get rolling easier then flip to 1st high with a flip of the button.Last edited: Aug 3, 2019
