you need to watch your butt, the recruiters are miss leading. which is some ways worse then lying. I submitted an application via con-ways site. got the call from the recruiter. did the release form for the background check. got the next call. they had me come to orientation. so I went. red flags from 8 a.m. on day one. first thing. had to sign a waiver form stating no guarantee of employment. so as i listened to the guy. he starts telling us the details about orientation. then we get told about the 4 background checks???? I thought that had been prior to orientation. I guess they bring you in on your word. which sounds neat. what i also found out. the internet application is pretty much worthless. and when you get started in orientation. you have to do it all over again. plus they use 4 different companies to do the background check. they go back to the age of 17 or 10 years. plus drivers also have to pass us security background check. this was left out by the recruiter. they never thought that I might not be interested in a job that is directly a matter of national security. the last part that was said before I decided that conway wasn't for me. is the fact that you have to prove your not lying. I got the impression of guilty until proven innocent. and the part i found extremely interesting. is out of a class of 10. 3 to 4 will get hired. so 30 to the most of a 40% chance of getting the job. plus I heard talk of 3500 to 3700 miles a week from the orientation guy. find that hard to believe with e-logs and solo drivers. the last thing I heard from the orientation guy. is out of a 100 applications the recruiter can only pick 5 of them. and then they have to move on to the next 100 applications. so less then a 5% chance of getting called for a job at con-way. that's funny! any ways. I stated the truth and the facts while it was still fresh in my memory.
this is also to help new in or out of school drivers to decide on a trucking job. once you go to orientation the first time. that job and it's out come will follow you the rest of your life.
WARNING!!!!!! Con way truckload!!! pay atentention to the red flags.

You have driven for 38 years and just now discovered to not believe everything that you hear? I don't mean to sound like a jerk but man everyone is going to elogs and how many folks are driving 3500-3700? Miles do not matter it is the pay check at the end of the week that matters. And unless you have something to hide, just be honest on your application. Be responsible, have a neat appearance, positive and do what is asked while at orientation. Then there will be nothing to worry about.

My Orentation had 11 in it ...and ALL cleared and got Employed
Every company does background checks ... Dot requires 10 yr employment record, criminal check will go all the way back ...so disclose ...tell the truth ...
maybe you weren't cut out of Conway TL ...and I usally avg 2800-3000 a week ..on a 70 clock if the stars line up you can get up to 4100 before taking a reset (so 3700 is possible but not a avg) -
This isn't your first rodeo, or did you work for the same company for 38 years? No of fence but that's hard to believe so you should know that all the things you stated are fed mandated and normal. 5 percent get called to come because 5 percent were actually honest or met the qualifications, that's normal driver.

Back in the CFI days of old, it was quite clear that they hired 2 out of 10 applicants.
As years went by, they'd hire anybody with a pulse.
Now with CSA and all, they are tightening up.
Personally that's a dandy idea.
I don't know about the security check, or the 4 background checks. It's a little late for me, but they can check mine.
I'd guess they do the simplest of pre check hoping your honest prior to arrival. Then fo the deep digging once the body actually shows up. Im sure it is expensive for all the checks and physicals.
I think many companies, not just trucking do the Internet application, then have to fill out a hard copy too. Maybe that's a test to weed out some when the info doesn't jive.
What do I know, I haven't filled out a job application in 21 years, but I do kerp my well fluffed resume to date just in case.seawind Thanks this. -
Hit enter twice.
At least Surfer Joe has a allie.
Oh yeah. In America you are guilty till proven innocent.
Why would you expect corporate America to be any different.
Especially when turned loose in $100, 000 in equipment, and high value freight, not to mention the reputation of the company, and human life.
Its simply like my wife calling me a liar, when I failed to tell her I went to the strip club. If I told her I was working, thats a lie.
If she asked the question and I failed to tell her, that's a lie. Not asking the question... how could I answer her, if she didn't ask.
Funny, 2 jobs in 30 years, but 4 wives.Last edited: May 28, 2013

I do agree that it seemed odd that Con-way didn't do any employment verification or other background checks until orientation, but its a cost thing. I was nervous because I left my most recent job due to a payroll dispute that was still working its way through the labor board. But since I had copies of my bols, they were able to verify employment which was all they really cared about.
For your application to be approved, you would have listed a clean criminal and driving background so unless you lied you have nothing to worry about. We do haul hazmat, cross borders, and deliver to security-sensitive facilities (notably military installments & prisons) so they absolutely need to verify your past.
As for miles, I've hit 3800/week once and 3500 a few times (in 4 months), but you definitely shouldn't budget expecting to average more than 2500/week.
PS there were 8 in my orientation & all 8 passed. I'm told one guy (out of 10) failed the week before mine because he "forgot" to tell them about 2 at fault accidents.Last edited: May 28, 2013

Bottom line: Conway is just another bottom feeder Mega company with lousy pay and lousy conditions. I should know; I used to work there and I ended up along with the other 98% of new hires for this company... just like the rest of them, I voluntarily quit after a year of terrible miles and terrible pay. And after having spoken with many, many other Conway drivers while I was there, I learned that almost everybody was getting low miles and low pay. Everybody that I met was struggling. That goes for those with considerable time with the company also. If anybody decides to work for this company, just know that, regardless of what ANYBODY tells you, you will earn about $600.00 a week on the average to work up to 100 hrs. a week. Period.
Want to get some more REAL facts? Good! You owe it to yourself to go to any truck stop (Pilot, TA, Petro, Loves, etc.) and talk to as many real Conway drivers as possible. Ask them about average pay, average miles, how much time that they sit waiting for their next load.
Good luck!
