Oh come on dont be harsh. The Obombya family needs their extravagant vacations every 2 weeks. It seperates the little people from their king and queen. These things are important, never a waste.
Makes me wonder if those that benefit from the WIA ever ponder why they take so much tax out of their paychecks.
A more serious question comes up when you look around and see how many "schools" are taking the money and giving not much in return to the profession in the way of marginal or poor drivers who just fill seats ====>>> IS the program actually benefiting US professionals and the industry?

Good question. The answer is that the program is not designed to "benefit professionals and the industry". It is designed to put people to work and it does.

I don't mind my tax money being spent on programs such as WIA, especially the truck driving schools. People willing to jump through the hoops to gain employment have earned my respect, knowing they could just as easily take the easy road and be lifelong welfare recipients and blame everyone else for their own lack of initiative.

I find it hard to believe (and a little scary) that the laziest, most worthless legislative branch in the history of this country did something. Are we sure it's not too late for the republicans to filibuster this in an attempt to divert any government money to various corporate interests with absolutely no benefit to constituents? If nothing else can Duke energy pollute another lake without repercussions? Maybe add an amendment reversing anything related to ACA?

I got my CDL through the WIA program, and in CA.
That was in 2010 in the San Diego area.

It took all of 2 weeks to get it approved, and me in a school. 6 weeks later I was working.

I've read that it is much harder in certain areas, or times. But the process was very streamlined when I went through it.

We could also talk about the Dem's diverting monies to fluff items that help no one but other special interest groups.

Is that what this thread is really about?

Throwing money at truck driving schools is not a good solution for unemployment. 99% of truck drivers do something else after 1 year so all WIA does is create CDL mills that supply exploitative mega carriers with a constant stream of people who 'fell into trucking.'

Instead we ought to allow Sallie Mae to provide student loans so wannabe drivers would have to pay back every cent of that tuition -- plus interest. Might make wannabe's think twice about signing on the dotted line -- and think a third time before quitting 2 months down the road...

While that is true, how much of the percentage of those who go through a program to get a CDL remain in the job after say two years?

Even if the program is designed to put people to work, with a saturated job market (which this is in reality - it is NOT a driver's market), the pay back of the money spent for education through payroll taxes collected should be something like four to five years, but if they are only in the job for a year or two, then the program is a losing idea for all involved - it perpetuates the revolving door problem, allows abuse of students by not setting any training standards or requirements other than getting a cdl but more importantly limits the industry through piling on more people into sub-standard jobs.
