Always take your own rag and towel, to bath with...also take cleaning supplies so you can disinfect the showers and handles before each use..sometimes, they are in a rush and don't clean them so be very careful...

If the only thing tests revealed was bursitis it would be a pre-existing condition that can easily be aggravated. I have bursitis on elbow for decades, just avoid contact on elbow with anything solid and don't wear sleeves that apply any pressure to area. I know it hurts like stink.
I have never had swelling as you experienced although I have seen pics. Dang!

I always spray everything with Lysol before I take a shower and use my own wash cloth.

You are definitely at risk for a foot fungal infection so wear shower shoes and don't rub the towels in your eyes or on your mouth, but that's about it. As long as you have no open sores you can't get an infection. That's what your skin does for you, it keeps out bacteria.

in short, DO NOT SIT on any bench or chairs in ANY shower room. you never know what another driver, "left behind".

i used to take a can of lysol with me, and sprayed the entire shower room, yeah, no kidding.

i actually take MY OWN wash cloths AND towels. i can never trust any truck stop to actually wash those with clorox.

i HAD BEEN a witness to seeing a truckstop employee putting the towels into the drier, and they were absolutely NEVER washed first!

i had personally witnessed a truckstop employee, mop up the floors, WITH BROWN WATER, and THEN mop up the shower stall..!!!!

you DO TAKE your life into your own hands trusting the shower room cleaning crew, in as much as the crew (maybe the very same ones) that "clean" the toilets and urinals.....!!!!

Well I thought the Petro Little Rock was the armpit of the truck stop world, but it's nice to know nobody beats the J, ever.

The rest aren't contenders, just pretenders.

    Exactly which J was this?

The big chains spray the showers down after every use. That stuff is toxic to all kindsa bugs. The liability for them is huge. You have a better chance of getting sick from the door handles at the entrances to the store. If you're healthy AND avoid the antibiotic pap smears in a bottle your body should have enough natural resistance to most all bacteria. Viruses and fungal issues on the other hand is a hit/miss. I haven't caught a cold in over 5 years and haven't had the flu in almost 30. Some people have weak immune systems but I doubt the plague's gonna come outta the fishhook shower.

Occasionally Travelers from out of Country with MMR (mumps, measels and rebella) have active infections and are actually infectious when they finally show symptoms enough to go the ER. Eventually it is reported to CDC each week and in really bad cases, reported to the media for anyone who has been in a particular location that infectious traveler passed through in a certain time frame to come and get checked also.

ALL states have some form of CDC reporting actively good to the previous week for a variety of specific problems.

I consider myself fortunate when I consider decades of truckstop showers without any problems immediately apparent.

You always use your own flip flops (Replaced each month) your own wash rags, towels of good quality and anti bacterial soaps etc, Dial anti bacterial is one example I used almost exclusively.

A spray bottle containing 10% bleach and a disinfectant mixure with a pernament marker labeling on it to it's contents in your shower bag to use on everything prior to getting undressed and going to take the shower.

One of the things (Im pretty famous for the occasional post once in a year or so when I say something pretty important) comes from my spouse when we were a team and issued one shower as a married couple. Certain places like the truckstop TA in Reno provided a special shower room where there are two shower sources where both in a couple can save time by showering at same time among other benefits.

My spouse as a woman constantly detected that the shower room issued in a common truckstop etc was used by the previous truckers for self gratifcation. She was with a nose somewhat sensitive to that kind of thing as a female. I would not know too much as a man myself thankfully. But after she constantly detected potential infections of that nature we started carrying 10% bleach from clorox mixed with other disinfectants careful not to create any two liquids which results in cyanide gas or some other gas that is lethal to humans. She actually mixed bleach with ammonia one time that just about killed her and out of the house when she realized possibly there is a lethal gas event happening really quickly cleaning that kitchen. The fire dept was called that day and they were able to use air monitors and identify concentrations of hazmat by vapor and how lethal it would have been given enough time with those two particular liquids.

Anyhow. With all of that said, I am sorry you had a infection or a event that needed some attention from the hospital. The problem is sometimes the hospital is even more dangerous to you or anyone due to MRSA and other infectious problems.

Unity in Searcy is one hospital with three devices that disinfect rooms when a patient leaves and it is made ready for the next admission.

I spent a week there last october and when it was time for me to leave they had one of the machines attended by 3 people waiting for me to leave so they can start the process of getting ready for the next patient.

UV-emitting robots cleanse Searcy hospital rooms

I can only imagine the benefits if the truckstop would purchase these units and took the time to clean the showers between drivers.

One of my last showers on the road involved a rest area in Ohio that featured a free shower cubicle in addition to the other usual necessary things in there such as a toilet etc. Upon visual inspection I found human blood on the wall and floor in small amounts to where it's probably a place where drug abusers of illegal drugs probably shot up and lost a certain amount of blood in that manner. They go in, shoot up god only knows what and get out of there when high.

I used a resperator and goggles and sprayed and cleaned that entire room with a can of lysol on one hand and full clorox bleach on other. I used a plastic fast cover that you can get for free from a rack that covers you against rain if you did not have a umbrella. So with that rough and minimal protection during that disinfecting process made that room clean enough to go ahead and do a shower in flip flops etc.

I visited my doctor at home requesting and got a range of blood tests to show any sort of infections ranging from STD through to expousre to illegal drugs by blood form sicknesses and I think it was about a three thousand dollar set of tests when they found nothing at that time period worth the effort. In short I was clean.

It was necessary to take that precauction and pay a percentage of that bill incurred for the knowledge that there is a huge risk of really getting infected in some way in some of those rest areas with showers or truckstops.

Its enough to have caused me to develop a situation called a Germophobe believe it or not, it's a actual and medically accepted problem. Only it's not really a problem. We clean everything often where i Live because we have to.

The building contains a number of people, many of whom are sick. Even radiated enough to trigger a radiation monitor next to my computer when they walk down the hall opposite that wall after a xray radiation treatment for cancer. They emit enough radiation to light that detector off.

At the moment as of 3/17 it's government sales only restriction. The public cannot buy this device from this source. However there is a keychain unit and other detectors you may purchase which are less accurate. But enough to know that there is enough infection to be a problem soemtimes.

    NukAlert Homepage

The united states since Fukushima Dachi Disaster has pretty much quit montioring in real time to the public knowledge of the radiation we have been getting long term as a country. But people maintain real time you tube 24/7 videos uploading a current radiation situation wherever it may be.

Don't ask me how I managed to go from simple infection in a shower at a truckstop all the way up to nuclear. In our building in the last 6 months we had 8 sick from flu, 3 of those 8 were sent to nursing homes involuntarily for 6 weeks, two returned with oxygen orders each night now in their rooms. The third died because cancer killed him from smoking. He did quit hoping the chemo and radiation stopped the small cell lung cancer the first time but started it right back up again and smoked few times a day and night as the cancer proceeded to kill him quickly. He died last week. It only took 4 months from initial diagnosis,

We had a no smoking policy put into place along with detectors capable of literally smelling a smoker trying to hide that activity in real time. That person just got him or herself evicted as soon as the printer gets through printing the forms. For one person death was the ultimate evictor.

Come on people. Live life on the edge. How are you going to maintain a healthy immune system if it hasn't seen a germ in 20 years? To read some of these posts, I should have been dead of some viral or bacterial infection 30 years ago but alas here I am. 57 years old and haven't been sick or to a doctor in over 15 years and I generally shower in truck stops practically every day of the year and and the last time I bought a can of Lysol was probably 10 years ago. :biggrin_25523:
