I have to confess that I might've been out of line one day.
I prebboked a load one week earlier before the day of the pick up on one of those "book it now" apps and realized that on the day before the rates were substantially higher than the one I had locked myself in...so I bounced off under a lame pretense ...still more the 24 hours before the pick up appointment.
One hour later, I checked the app and saw the same load for a few hundred more and I booked it again.

I still keep asking myself ... was it out of line?

Oo this is a good one and I am torn. I'd say na it wasn't out of line because #### happens and I bet you'd never do that fully aware and trying to waste everyone's time. Your survival instinct was telling you "this does not make the most sense for my bottom line" I see it more like an innocent reflex that's just me

    That is really f'd up.

I think I probably would have said something along the lines of I don't care what conversation we had you have a posted rate that you're saying you're going to pay $1,600. How can you not pay that? You have it in writing that's what you're offering.

I agree with the other person though. As soon as she said I'll give it to you for 15 you should have said you know what can you do 18?

    F her.

If she was arrogant enough to refuse an available truck they seem so desperate to cover, over her own $100 screw up, I'm pretty sure she's moved on. OP should do so as well, and not be a sore winner. I'm a believer in karma, and can't imagine anything good coming from rubbing their noses in it.

My thinking was that I dealt with a soulless algorithm of sorts, so it was an easy thing to commit by knowing that you would not hurt anyone's feelings, at least not directly.

But this spot market is generally "out of line" environment where there is little room for such sentiments on both sides of the spectrum...brokers and carriers.
Well, of course, with some reasonable proportions remaining.

I hate to rain on the parade but I bet she was being truthful.

I had 3 loads recently that I had $2000 in and was trying and normally move them for $1800. Carrier said I want $2000 and I said sorry I just can’t do that. Time goes by and I decide to go with the $2000 and now he wants $2500 lol

Well, I’m bummed because now I’m giving him what he wants and now it’s not good enough. So, we end up settling in 3 trucks for $2200 which allows me to lose $600.

It’s not all rainbows and butterfly’s for brokers and especially when your someone who is working within parameters set by the boss. I took over this particular situation in order to “only” lose $600.

I get it as I’m a carrier as well but customers hold the cards and it’s a fine line to play sometimes. Give her a break, likely she’s doing the best she can.

That's your capitalism at work. Two opposing forces wrestling for the best outcome. Morals are just white gloves, best to be ignored for the picture clarity.

Yeah for sure. Of course I was not happy at all the goal post moving. Especially, since we had done dozens of loads together previously. I’d like to think and prefer sustainability into the future but in a pinch and when things have to go, I reckon it is what it is. As a carrier I probably would have been more forgiving for the greater good, but in this case it didn’t happen. Of course, I’ll remember such unforgiving attitude.

Some carriers see long term, some brokers see long term, most see right in front of their bumper/computer screen.

As it is in the OP case. The broker lady wants to pay the least, the OP wants to get paid the most.
Most population, I bet, takes the broker lady side, after all, nobody wants to pay $10 for a jug of milk....
Maybe if there was transparency...the OP's bid for more would be mitigated by it...maybe.
On the other hand, in this adversarial configuration, it is his job to want all the money in the World to haul that load and her job not to allow it.
