That way of thinking does not work with a 3rd party or broker. They don't give a #### about you or your word. They're there to keep as much money from you as possible. This is their only job. Appreciate their job, and give them hell! This is what they signed up for, they're not selling you stamps at the post office!

Edit: What I mean by "give them hell" is be a worthy competitor. It's a game, do you want to lose? Do you like losing? Be a good sport... give them hell!!!!

    Let's go team truckers!!!

Another's lack of integrity. Does not change mine.

Remember. It's not what you do when you think people are watching. It's what you do when you think no one is watching. That shows your character.

The difference here is that there is one watching, the one on the other side of the negotiating table. In such a case, nice guys have a funny way of finishing last.

Probably. Plus I'm not saying he did anything wrong. Just how my values would have me act. Would I enjoy the 1600. Sure. But I'd stick to the 1500. Rather lose 100. Than my self respect.

I think that's a little too much of a drama. But my hat off to you...you cannot be wrong about having such high ethical standards.
I'd say, the op example stays within the rules of the game, especially, for as long as the deal is not sealed, yet.
I'd feel bad, If I bailed on the load that picks up in a few hours or do it to a broker where some mutual recognition bond is already established.

In all due respect, you sound like someone with integrity, this is great! I'm not saying that.

You have to understand, a broker, any broker's (I used to be a financial product broker) job is to stand between you and the buyer or seller. Most brokering jobs are absolutely useless. Most freight brokers are absolutely useless, they're just parasites. Banking and financial service sectors figured it out long ago (this is why I'm driving a truck today). The insurance industry is figuring it out too.

Freight brokers are also on the chopping block in the near future.

The average broker is nothing more than an impediment to the free market. They harm the market, not help it. They don't care about your good word, your family, your feelings, your fuel, your expenses, your maintenance--they only care about mentally wrestling as much as they can from you.

    It's a game, be a worthy competitor.

And I don’t care about theirs. It’s not their job and it’s not my Job. I told a friend over bbq this afternoon that I enjoy the art of the deal. Making friends with a broker is about like having a pet crocodile…. It’s nice, but they will eat you if given the chance.

Sort of like banks. They act like they are your friend, but no, they are there to make MONEY off of you. However, if you have some leverage on your side, you can work a deal that makes you money off of THEM.

I think it’s great. And my goal in regard to banks is to one day never need them ever again. That’s the day that I will have “won”.

It will be a glorious day.

Edit: My whole point is don’t hate a broker or a bank. Make it work for you and always work angles to give you the upper hand or at least a level playing field.

I think there are some brokers who have way more $$ on a load but will tell you they’re tapped out at the posted rate

I also think there are brokers who say I only have X in the load and I’m losing XX already and that is the truth
I think those are the new guys or clueless guys just like the drivers who get that $25,000 truck and figure they can take $1.20 freight all day long and make money right up to the point something breaks then they either figure it out or quit

That low ball broker will either figure it out due to not getting loads covered or just get out of the business all together just the same

Sometimes they take a loss just to get the load moved and keep their customer happy so to not lose the account.
