I drove 3 hours to US Xpress's orientation because I don't like buses. I had a great time there. I made new friends and the food was great. I learned a lot of new things. I took pictures of their trucks and posted them on Facebook. I pasted all their tests and they hired me. I was happy. They sent me home to wait until they found me a trainer that was supposed to be local to my area.

My training coordinator called me back a few days later and said he matched me up with a trainer from Chicago who only drives at night and does dedicated accounts. I didn't like that. There's barely any traffic at night to practice in, and dedicated trips give me less of a variety of backing practice. I could deal with that, but here's the kicker. They wanted me to take a 30 HOUR BUS TRIP from VA to Chicago and have me SPEND THE NIGHT AT A BUS STATION in Ohio between bus rides to meet my trainer. I tried work out a different plan with my coordinator, but he said there's no way I could get out of that trip, and that I can't change trainers either. So I quit.

I now have an orientation date with Swift, because their terminal is 45 minutes from my house. (I don't know if that benefits me in any way once I get hired.)

    So, my questions are:
Was I just being a wuss? Was I wrong for quiting? Is Swift a bad idea?

I don't know much about Swift, you hear good and bad, like all the rest. Personally, I would have sat at the bus station for two nights if i knew i had a job., if your trainer would only drive at night that is good for you, because you would be able to drive all the day time hours.

Wish you the very best though driver..

From the dedicated account alone, I would have refused. If you're training and running the same stuff for several weeks, you're not learning trip planning and getting the variety of scenarios you will get when you're on your own.

I'm not spending an overnight in a bus station, either.

No, at USX the trainee does all the driving. The trainer just sits in the jump seat for at least the first 75 hrs.

They're going to train you and give you a job like US was going to do. One thing you need to understand about this job is the fact that you're going to have to do some things that you don't want to do if you want to get experience and make this job work for you. Theres not a driver on the road that didn't have to do some sheety things when they were new. I started driving in '97. My first truck was a nightmare. A 20 year old truck that was falling apart. I could look down and see the transmission through the floorboard. I sucked it up and drove that old truck until I had enough experience to go out and get the job that I wanted. It's called paying your dues. I'm not telling you to let anybody step on you or take advantage of you. I'm just telling you that you are gonna have to take some crap until you get the experience you need.

    UNFREAKING BELIEVABLE:biggrin_25526:
You have got to be kidding me!! This folks is why these companies keep doing it because as long as people are willing to do this crap they will never stop!!

Another thing, what kind of "training" would a person recieve if they are basicly teaming?? Trainee drive in the day while trainer drives at night??:biggrin_2554:
