so i was offered a job with a company that does heavy haul. i went for a 2 hour test drive and he said my driving is safe but i have allot to learn. he is willing to put me in a truck with another driver so i can learn how to handle the weight. i did not accept the offer YET and told him i will think about it. there is also one other company that interviewed me that i want to hear back from before i make a decision.

i drove an 18 speed kenworth T800 with about 600 hp, more power then anything else i have ever driven. it was in interesting experience. they are rated for 37 ton max. its a walking floor trailer and i noticed that they dont turn like a van trailer or flatbed.

personally im not sure heavy haul is a good idea until i get more seat time. i told him i will give him an answer in a week.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

Some heavy haul companies hire new cdl grads fresh out of school. You don't need more seat time unless you're one of those people with low self-confidence.

he said they are short 3 drivers right now which is probably why they are willing to consider me. i want to hear what the other company says before i give anyone an answer. explore all options.

Learning heavy haul early would actually be beneficial to you as long as you were trained properly for the work.

You wouldn't have any bad habits to unlearn.

if I was a truck co owner and interviewed/road-tested a potential new hire and offered him a job and he then says he will "let me know in a week", I would hire someone else immediately and forget him.

Only need to know one thing when puling heavy vans. Give yourself more space to stop. All other driving is basically the same. If the pay is there, I'd go for it.
Be sure he knows you need training on inspections for drop axles and walking floor, which should take all of 15 minutes...

Why is it called heavy haul when it's in a box. True heavy haul is lowboy or A and B trains. Not a box with extra axles. Even the Mi.train guys are smart enough not to call it that...
    Oh wait I'm over 80k I'm a heavy hauler.lol
