Yeah but there's a fee on the coin machine at Walmart. My local credit union has one that's free of charge for members. We go in there every couple of years with big jars that I always dump my pocket change into.

    They just discovered this?

I remember way back reading about this when I was living in MA. Here’s an article..

In 2008, SEMASS workers found enough salvageable money among the trash collected from 60 Southeastern Massachusetts communities to donate 12 55-gallon drums full of pennies to the Wareham Public School annex, an alternative school for students at risk of dropping out. Recovered money also allowed Damien’s food pantry in Wareham to purchase 80 holiday turkeys for the needy.

“Money too damaged to be used has to be given back to the federal government because you can’t use U.S. currency for scrap metal,”

Ok, thanks a lot to the OP! Since I've retired early and didn't have a plan and money is always short - I've seen online these articles about all this rare coinage that's worth a lot of money....so, I've been squinting and looking thru my coins that I always seem to have in a jar somewhere for that million dollar bicentennial quarter! So now....when you guys see me at your local dump at midnight with a headband light and a huge magnifying glass in one hand and a 40ounce in the other hand, don't be laughing cause you know what I'm doing there! (At midnight cause who can afford to pay their ridiculous entry fees at the dump?)

The only coins worth anything are the old ones made from real silver and real gold .
