You'll be freaking out your first week, then your second week you'll be too tired to care about all the little things you were concerned about that don't much matter, and by your 3rd week you'll be fine. I did it with no school, they just pointed me to the truck said hookup up and go and I made it ok, and you will too.

If you were top of the class at school and have some type of experience backing a trailer you should be alright. You also picked the worse time to come out since you will be doing winter driving soon. I'm glad I had a trainer to help me through that first snow storm. I even thought I was smart by doing my training in March. I still hit a couple of snow storms. Being from South Texas where you don't see much snow really scared the mess out of me. If you are use to it. You should be fine.

I just think you guys are more likely to get in an accident and once in an accident it is tough to get a job. Hope it works out for you.

They don't send you out with a trainer BUT they DO put you through a very intensive 10 day boot camp to make sure your ready. You might want to be with a trainer instead.

According to this link http://www.wksh.com/Recruiting2.aspx it appears as if recent grads are CHARGED for the "10-day advanced training." Check out the last link on the page, "Recent Graduates." It says "Low-cost student financing." Wonder why they'd put this on this link if they're not charging for this (ahem) specialized training?

Go slow, don't get yourself in a hurry and realize that you know nothing. No problems admitting to people you are doing something for the first time. I do it all the time myself.

Even told a Canadian Customs gal that I was nervous crossing the border last week. Things went great after that. She understood my status a lot better and she relaxed too.

Once you find the middle of your lane you'll get comfortable, just take no chances with anything on your right side. If you can't see or determine that you're clear, stop, get out and look. If someone wants your lane don't fight them off, let them have it, or they'll try to take it and cause you trouble. They will be rude and you have to get used to it, because you want no trouble with them. Good Luck!

I chose W/S for the O/P's reason. I learned how to drive from their now defunct 30 day school. Not a day goes by I'm not grateful for my decision. Keeping in mind I'd never driven anything on a frozen surface before my first winter in a semi.

If they don't have faith in your skills, they simply won't cut you loose.

Their trucks are getting long in the tooth, but you could do worse.

I spoke to Watkins Shepard a couple weeks ago and was told they no longer have the training program "due to loss of funding" - this is only in response to the "Low-cost student financing" you see on the website - meaning the website is not up to date and they should take that down. They recommended a local truck driving school they hire from all the time, was his words. This was in California.
