Ways to make money work for you later?

What is a decent companies match for 401K?
    Is 401K neccesary?
Ways to start saving if midlife age?

Put the maximum amount into some type of retirement plan; 401K, credit union, federal bank such a USAA. Buy rental property which you don't even have to manage. I never put any money in trucking company stock because you never know when even the so called best companies will lock the gates.
Pay a real estate agent or some property management company to manage it, ie, collect the rent, take care of repairs, screen renters, evict renters, etc. You just check your bank statements each month to see what your new balance is.
One driver on here bought a 4-plex and lives in one and rents the other three. Good plan and you can do it too.
You have from right now until social security age to prepare for a comfortable retirement.
Yes, social security will still be there and preaching it won't be is simply a scare tactic.

Deductions to federal 100, to the state 75. Once a year collect your money in returns. This is a foundation for your second year savings. Continue to add to it. Some will be lost to taxes.

Estimate your miles paid load 1200 miles at .50 a mile, gross = 600 down to 400 deductions again to 220 or so. Three days to deliver at most including loading day. 25 dollars daily for food and fluids. Down to 160 or so. 140 to savings, 20 to your pocket. At the next 1200 mile run for that work week you should have 380 to savings and 40 to your pocket plus any unspent food and drink money.

at end of month it will be around 1520 to savings. Plus whatever you did not eat and drink. The deductions take care of itself.

Remember this is for solo only. Teams you doubled this.

When we had 9-11 our savings stood at 16000. 9000 was lost to replacing a room in the house for storm damage and the rest carried us 7 weeks for the two of us with no payroll at all. (The payroll was destroyed by 9-11, took that long for all of that to be caught up.) at the end of 7 weeks we had some still in savings.

If we had no savings we would have had to sit at home on unemployment for months potentially.

In our day in 2001, per diem for 306 service days logged away from home at default deducting rate came to 13700 against taxes on 67000 dollars for two drivers. That equalled 34000 or so for me and same for spouse. or 120 per day. Or 16 hours driving = 7.50 a hour. That year minimum wage was 6.25

If you go the 401k route, at least contribute the maximum amount that your company will match.

    IRA?
Mutual stocks? AA stocks, AAA stocks?
I know I need to build a 6 month expense savings. After this most recent debacle.
I also think about rebuilding starters, and alternators. As a side job, or full time later. As I like using my hands.

    Bluedew and X-Country Thank this.

You could also use the $15K condo as your legal address and get the tax benefits of Nevada; no personal income taxes and no food taxes. At the same time, put renters in there' maybe a few truckers that need a permanent address in a tax free state.

    X-Country and Intothesunset Thank this.

I guess I put a few bucks away on accident once. lol
I was at home one spring and had my daughters clean out my truck, getting my winter gear out and just a good spring cleaning, they found 1800 bucks in a cubby hole I had hid in there several months before and forgotten about. lol
