Need some input please....
We are driving for owner operators leased to a expedite company. We love our owners, and Love the company we work for. However, our pay is on a 60/40 split, with us ( boyfriend and I ) buying the fuel- but we dont get 100 percent of fuel surcharge.. that money is figured into the toal gross and then split 60/ 40. We are pretty social people and have met quite a few other drivers, and owners from our company while out on the road. Shocked to find out that others are on the 60/40 split and the team buying the gas also gets 100 percent fuel surcharge! We do struggle with fuel prices, and often borrow money out of our personal checking account to complete a run, comchecking it back after we POD. Is anyone out there on a program like this? We don't want to switch owners, we plan to address this with them... just wanted to get some more input from the experienced truckers out there. You do think it's fair for whoever buys the gas to get the fuel surcharge ?

The person buying the fuel should get 100% of the fuel surcharge.
I have been on the Expideter forums some, and almost all the drivers have a 60/40 pay setup with 100% FSC to the driver, since the driver is paying 100% of the fuel cost. -
Are you yourselves Owner Operators?
Are you leasing the trucks from the O/O's?
Or...are you simply employees of the Owner-O/O?
Who is responsible for IFTA?
It sure sounds like you're employees of the O/O's.
As an employee, none of the trucks operating costs should come out of your pockets.
That said, Congress was recently given an opportunity to make it law that 100% of the FSC's were passed on to the people/person actually responsible for the fuel costs.
Congress failed to do that & as such, any FSC that trickles down from the company/broker is per pre-arrangement between the company & the person actually paying for the fuel.
There's no set standard for how much of the FSC trickles down to you.
That percentage is supposed to be in a written contract you signed or otherwise agreed to.
That FSC thing really strikes a nerve with me.
I personally call it fraud when the FSC is collected in my name & then only part of it makes it to me.
The customer is defrauded & so is the person responsible for the fuel cost.
Ok I ranted enough. -
Seems to me that the fuel surcharge is where some companies make some more profit. I know quite a few O/Os in this area, and most of them get robbed out of their fuel surcharge, and it burns them to see that!
I guess if we dont all stand up for ourselves, they will walk over us!
