One thing I've noticed in the last 10 months that I've been a member of this board is that drivers have absolutely no influence over their destiny. There are more than a few so-called influence groups that are supposedly organized for and dedicated to the betterment of all drivers' day-to-day existence whether it effects money or working conditions.
It seems to me, as a new driver, that these groups are ineffectual. How much research and how many statistical analyses does it take to make those that actually put rules into action, i.e. legislators, understand that there is a "credit/debit" that must be considered when proposing regulations that, in effect, serve to stymie the flow of goods to America?
I can't imagine that there is one among us who would openly endorse the fact that some have to suffer for the "good of the many". It seems to me, as a newly released "mover of goods", that we have to accept that much of what happens in our determination to survive and prosper depends upon the absolute fact that, a) there's a price to be paid if we want to have ALL of our needs/wants met and b) that the framework within which we, as "movers of goods", work to satisfy the "good of the many" can be subjected to unrealistic scrutiny only to the detriment of the "many".
Certainly there are carriers and drivers that simply need to go, but, in the final analysis, those drivers and carriers that remain must have some assurances that they will be protected, and further, rewarded for the service they provide to EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN.....
'Scuse the rant!
Oldnew...
We are not in control and, basically have NO say in the matter!

Olbie, the driver is already being 'hunted down" as the weakest prey in this equation.
Noone will touch the carriers, shippers, brokers, they all in "one big profitable bed together". I am sorry i should be more positive, but dang it! I think if I read one more story of how the driver is to blame........I think i might possibly go ballistic!!
We are at the bottom of the food chain.........and i for one resent it to the max!
Yeah i know there is some that got years in and they can call the shots......but that to me is not enough. Remember when you were a kid and your folks would say.... want it better for you than I had it......that is missing in trucking!
Anyways good post.simplyred1962, TheHealthyDriver, SprkPlug62 and 3 others Thank this. -

sammycat and simplyred1962 Thank this. -
your missing my point.........and that is truckers are their own worst enemies. They are not consolidated and collected in their thinking and have no voice in what happens to them. Your correct and I like your positive attitude...but the driver has way too much liability on his shoulders compared to the rest of the business. (that is the nicest way I can put it).

UNION!!!
Orgainze!! Jimmy Haffa had the same issues in his time.
Unfortunately the Unions of Today are at the top of the food chain with the rest of corporate America. BUT you do not need a 3rd Part Union to Organize.
All you need is a group that has the Balls to stand up for what they know is right and stick by their guns legally.
My wife being from India I have had the privelege to see how they orgainze (with no union) and fight against BS coruption. Even against their own Gov't.
While I was there in 2005 the price of fuel went up the equivilant of 50cents / gallon over night. By friday the truckers and most of the nation declared a strike by Monday if the prices didn't come back down.
The prices didn't. Monday after noon everythig nation wde was closed except emergency services. And do not get caught in the streets breaking the strike you would get the #### beat out of you.
We stayed at home for 3 days. They finally dropped the price of fuel back below the price it was in the beginning by Wed afternoon.
Coroprate America wants to keep every Industry's laborers, Bottom feeding where you can't possibly take more than a week off without pay. That way they don't have to worry about you pulling something like that.
If everyone could put themselves in a position that they could take 1-2 months off with out pay and not think twice about it, then maybe we coud call in strikes that would serve as an eye opener to these Corporations.
People don't like hearing Strike, BUT honestly the only ones that are really scared of a Strike are the corporations. For everyday you are out of work loosing $200-300/day if fortunate to even make that. They are loosing 5-10 times that per person. You do the math!!!
Corporation truley need the workers more than you need them.
Not sure where this DAC report BS came from but that crap needs to be gotten rid of. It just seems that it should be Illegal!!!
I work in Aviation which is even higher on the Demands and Responsibilities of others lives than trucking. But when we walk away from a JOB for what ever reason only people that can hold it against us is that company.
If another company calls them for ino about us all they are allowed to tell them is our dates of service, and position, and in some cases pay rate (some states even that is illegal).
I have a 10yr back ground check done on me every time I am hired on, and I have walked out on more than a few companies in my past. Many with less than 6 months.
I have never had a hard time hiring on with some one else.
They do use common sense in that aspect. They realize not all companies and people are made for each other. -

Can we even conceive of a movement of goods without those that move the goods? How else can it be done?
Thanks![/QUOTE]
Oldnew all great points and remember you see this with NEW EYES compared to those that have been in this industry for years and have been beaten down to the point where they fear their job! And in today's economy don't we all fear for our jobs?? Corporate America is just that- we are the peons that YES DO USE THE SERVICES and PROVIDE THE SERVICES but are treated like sheet! Strike Union maybe 50 years ago in this county not now. Again hold no power. Write the government HA our ''elected'' officials that are bought and paid for by the same corporate America that sheets down on us?? It's no different in my job (nursing) for years same thing- bieatch and complain but as NDBADLANDS said and I quote, '' and that is truckers are their own worst enemies. They are not consolidated and collected in their thinking and have no voice in what happens to them.'' That is a perfect way to sum it all up.
I too love your positive attitude and keep it up. You never know that your one voice could be the voice that changes attitudes!! Goodness knows we all know how you influences on TTR!!JustSonny and NDBADLANDS Thank this. -
Cripes Cat i was almost not "seeing things your way" till I saw where you paid me that nice compliment. Flattery will get you everywhere! lol Seriously, thank you for noticing my point. Don't you sometimes wish you could be gauranteed years to get it all worked out?
JustSonny Thanks this. -
you know the answers to those questions. Let me put it this way.....you have a young son/daughter, 24 years old, would you suggest they drive a truck for a company/or as an O/O?
I am like you......I have the "luxury" of noone counting on me if this "trucking thing" doesn't work for ME! What makes me upset is like you say and others ....Trucks move America.....then where in hell is the respect and pay? If truck drivers truly moved America we wouldnt even be having this discussion.
Rant over.JustSonny and Blue Screen Thank this.
