Housing isn’t the only thing. The illegal’s are helping the travel trailer industry become larger and stronger. Down here in the dirty south just about every house and property that has an hispanic family living on it has two, three, sometimes four or more travel trailers with other families living in them. I’ve also noticed tons of them don’t have a vehicle to drive near them so I figure most are just stash houses for extended undocumented family or friends or other coyotes.

The old 21W Bucyrus Erie drilling rig I grew up was from the 1940’s and had poured Babbitt bearings on the shafts instead of roller bearings we all use today, so I was taught how to pour new bearings, and align the shafts.

The truck it was mounted on was a 1960 IH B170 with 9:00-20 bias ply tube type wheels. So I learnt from a young age how to change them which came in handy later in life.

My first truck was a 1973 Cabover Kenworth. 335 Cummins with a 9 spd. 10:00-20 tires on Dayton wheels, truck and the 42’ flatbed that came with it. Bought that truck in the spring of 1987.

Back then we didn’t have a cdl here in WV as we do today, cost me $25 for a Chauffeur license to drive it.

I can still remember the slogan I heard from some when the cdl was becoming mandatory… to keep the best of the best on the road. Well, in my opinion they sure missed that by a mile from what I’ve seen over the years.

Many of my mentors were WWll vets, guys that could do things with a truck that seemed unimaginable, but, they had trouble writing and the cdl mandate caused them to find work elsewhere other than out on the road. 2 men told me they were afraid they couldn’t pass the written test because of their lack of reading comprehension. Back then it was all written not electronic like I hear it is today.

I’ve been very fortunate over the years, never had an accident of any kind to date, but the oh lords have been many trying to avoid someone else’s mistake or carelessness.

Over 38 years now and still don’t call my myself a pro, just a normal guy with a truck trying to live in a fast paced world we all are trying to survive in…..

You had an eight year apprenticeship. You got to drive when there was time, and watch when there wasn't. You recieved instruction and feedback. You were given time to demonstrate competence of basic responsibilities before being given more.

Imagine if at 18 you'd never driven anything larger than a Ford Fiesta and then got tossed the keys to a truck and told to "figure it out". The poop would have been flying. Now do it on today's congested roads.

And if you don't think the CDLs are functioning as a gate keeper - have another think. Its a pretty crummy gate, but its better than nothing.

I never had any formal training in the modern sense either. The only “training” I received was 5 Saturdays out for an 2 hours each with a local driving school who had a single screw day cab and a pup trailer. That got me through the test. Anything beyond that I learned on the job, so if I can “figure it out” there’s no reason why anyone else shouldn’t be able to.

At least you have the option of real ID or not. In Florida you don’t have a choice..real id or you aren’t getting license..I’m guessing they treat all the non domiciled licenses the same way..one would think.

They had started rolling them out when I got mine renewed. Sure next time I will be forced to get one. Also, I understand how it works on getting the stuff but based off what I have seen on X on some of these license I think we are talking about more then just this situation on the names. Seeing lots of different stuff that I should had captured and posted here.

Ha ha That is funny. I am glad my name is not that long to deal with that. I almost shortened my company name when I figured out it takes to long to write out on paper when checkin to pick or drop loads. I hate writing all that stuff out.

To much fraud was done in the last 10 years on CDL's. That is my reason. I would be okay with every CDL in the USA be reviewed if that makes you feel better. I don't mind making everyone be involved. To many FAT out of shape Truckers that are Citizens that are most likely Paid off as well. No way they can pass a physical.

Then.....you'll see that all the problems in trucking that we blame immigrants for will still exist on a high level...piss poor training, distracted driving, SPEED, flip flops, blocking fuel islands, over-capacity, high fuel, "low pay," poor working conditions, poor freight rates, and most importantly, the root of all the issues in trucking: it's too quickly and easy to get a CDL and go to work in weeks.

My experience has been i see mostly foreign drivers. I know because when I encounter Americans, it's an exception

Nah. I'm not asking shippers and receivers about that. It ain't what I get paid to do...also.....I don't care for real. The immigrants don't affect me at all. America is changing in terms of demographics and I like it. I don't feel threatened by immigrants taking my job. I'd like to think im pretty good at this. I try to get better each load. Rather than worry about competition, id rather keep my head down, run the miles, and be as good and reliable as possible. I think one has to be so good at what they do, that he/she is undeniable. I think I like that philosophy better.

You're missing the real issue. You can be the best that's ever lived. If they can get it done cheaper, you are no longer needed
