Onthefence,
Try to find the carrier with the highest starting mileage pay and the one with the highest amount of miles (yeah, easier said than done).
Don't settle, whatever you do. Understand that these companies fully intend to drag you in, beat you up, and watch you slide out of the exhaust chute in disgust after about 9 months.
You ever think of Crete? Seems like they would be excellent for a first company. I wish I would have started there.
Trust me, you WILL miss those kids. It is the most heartbreaking thing to talk to them on the phone knowing that you wont get to see them for another three weeks or so. But if you keep their pictures in the cab, you'll be reminded WHY you are out there. I never got used to being away from my son, as much of a nightmare he seems to be when I'm home. But he needs to eat and be clothed.
Kudos to you for thinking of your family's welfare before your own convenience. It's a huge step and you are in for some surprises (some pleasant, some unpleasant), but you can enjoy the biz in the long run if you look for the positives. (besides, once you start driving solo, you get "diesel in the veins" and it's hard to stay away from trucks).

Probably already finished school, went on the road, got fed up with it, quit, went home, back at the factory, and trucking is now a distant memory. No need to post anything here, right ?
BigJohn54 Thanks this. -
find an outfit that gets you home every weekend. I work for Builders transportation out of memphis. I started right out of school, I make decent money, and im home with my kids every weekend.

I called the shop 3 times about a chaffing air line on a Mack, and they basically told me that I was a driver, and there is no way there would be a chafe on a 40k mile truck. LOOONG story shorter...I got inspected in Maryland, got warnings for the air lines, and safety wanted me out b/c I got some CSA points out of it. We parted ways. I won't work for a company that pulls that crap.
