I know most of you act like it's pretty impossible to find a local trucking job that gives weekends off. It seems like there is some out there especially here in Southern CA. I have always had a huge interest in going to school to get my class A and operate a big rig. From what i have read online it seems that the biggest down side of a local job is the long hours.
For example i was looking at this:

Please don't be mean or sarcastic. I am just trying to get input.
Thanks.
Weekends off?

Again it depends on the company. I worked 4 10 hour days with 3 days off every week. You could work more for overtime and most of us did. You'll just have to get out there and find them. The union local LTL drivers make a killing for pay. And there's some non-union that compete with pay to keep good drivers. You'll never find them using a computer because the better companies have no need to advertise for drivers. The drivers come to them and not the other way around.

My husband just got a local job. He was OTR for 7 months with a good company. He got a job with a company 5 min. from home. Hes home every night and off on weekends but he works 14 hrs everyday. He gets paid by the hour with everything over 40 overtime. He likes it.

Mon - Fri, No weekends, but if there were, One Senior driver would scarf it right up. I worked many times, 2-4 hours on a saturday, got paid 8. All Overtime. Doesn`t get any better LOCAL. Heard throught the grape vine, USF Holland will be hiring 3500 new drivers. And they are a fine company.

It depends on the company. I was told I'd have weekends at home. Key phrase being at home. Now it seems I get some weekends off but usually miles from home.

I haul hot oil 5 days a week, home every night. I have odd loading hours that screw up my body clock for sleep, but i like it.

Dirt is usually 5 days a week, but depending where you work you may end up doing Saturdays or Sundays dumping topsoil in gardens that it's tough to back a pick-up into, never mind a big truck. Plus if you think shippers are hard to deal with, try homeowners.
I did a bit of that in a two-ton for extra cash a few years ago. Not for everybody, but I enjoyed it. I might see if I can do it again if getting into this class 1 training takes much longer...beer and cigarettes aren't free, after all. The guys in the big trucks make more money than those of us in the little trucks, of course, and they do less residential.
The drawback here is that there's no work in the winter for newbies. The experienced guys get the snow clearing work and what little gravel work there is. The upside is that the right place will teach you to run a loader too, and it never hurts to have extra skills.
