I'm in the San Francisco bay area all the time. The scales get so backed up, that you'll see an open sign as you approach it, then they close it right away, and open the scales on the opposite side of traffic. Some guys take naps at the scales.

Some of the weigh stations I see on a regular basis leave the digital display on even when closed. I've run it through before when I didn't have a chance to scale sooner.

PresPass says "red light, must enter weigh station." A few years ago Manchester, TN was closed for construction or closed at regular periods during the night but their PrePass was still giving red lights to passing trucks. Some drivers entered and others stayed on the highway. That's trucking, you have information from conflicting sources and you have to bet on which one counts, or generates most trouble if you ignore/obey it. That's my guess.

I routinely see drivers entering the weigh station and then ignore the bypass light and cross the scale anyway. shm. Or they enter the station, bypass but ignore the 30 mph speed limit and "speed" down the bypass lane to the on-ramp doing 10 mph. I wish they would go back to their failed country and their hungry, dirty relatives. I don't have time for junk in my day. Just kidding, it's probably some wannabee pimp driving a Swift truck. Some of the drivers into/out of my plant are never, ever, no matter what NOT holding their stupid phone to their stupid head, even at 4am. But they make up for their distraction by driving 20 under the speed limit, for your safety.
not4hire Thanks this. -
I was going eastbound approaching OKC and saw a car tailgating a truck so close he just followed him into the weigh station west of town. This was before cellphones, but not before stupid.not4hire, tinytim, SingingWolf and 2 others Thank this.

This industry has no room for common sense like that.
RollingRecaps and Al. Roper Thank this. -
Trucks do it all the time at the Perry scale in northern Utah.
Sign says open when flashing and the lights aren't flashing. They don't drive through at night for some reason. Only during the day.
