Looking to get into the trucking industry. I'm a big guy, 345 lbs, but fit. I've read in this forum that Sleep Apnea tests are common among the companies, but is weight or Body Mass an issue when being considered for employment. Figured if it is, I will take care of that, then get into a good school. Thanks from a Newbie / Lurker on this forum.
Weight, an issue?

The trucking companies don't want anything to do with sleep apnea tests, it is the DOT forcing this requirement. Trucking companies are looking for a good driving record, good criminal record, insurable, be able to pass a physical and willingness to adapt to the truck driving lifestyle.

Moon_Beam, Thanks Man, I understand the DOT thing. Thanks for your 2 cents. I qualify on all counts, good record, no criminal history, physically fit and wanting to get into the lifestyle, such as it is.
Much obliged! -
I have read somewhere the DOT is stopping sleep apnea testing, Unless I am wrong, But I remember seeing the posts I think on here. But as far as weight issue I know there are a few companies that hire with a high BMI... I think Prime is one of them, But then you look at some of their Drivers......

Apply to the companies out of the Midwest and you'll be fine your health insurance might be higher if deemed at risk in several categories.
Pass the agility and physical. Your weight number won't matter. -
If weight was a problem there would be a lot of truckers that would not get hired.

When I went through Prime orientation in June, BMI was not a problem. A lot of big guys and gals were in my class, just make sure your blood pressure will pass DOT medical and you can do the duck walk.

Try and work somewhere that has the bigger trucks (Kw T-700, Frtl'r Cascadia, etc). Avoid the little Int'l Pro-Stars. I was somewhere the other day and saw a rather large man driving a prostar and I have to say he looked like he was an adult driving a kids toy truck bought at Toys-R-Us. Honestly, something isn't right about the physical size ratios in that particular truck but I can't put my finger on exactly what it is about it.

I drive a Peterbilt 379EXHD and thats considered a small truck but I'm very comfortable in it. I'm 5' 10" and 285 just weighed yesterday.
