While I'm sure a few are private, most are commercial business. Point is, one would be hard pressed to not find a scale within 100 miles of just about anywhere in the US., much less than 500 miles the op claims. -
That’s why it’s always good to have some cash available.

The only problem with that 5th wheel advice is some carriers have that 5th wheel slide disabled. They do it because they have learned after losing fairings or smashed reefers to set them! Heavy on the nose can be a tough problem to solve. I would also suggest drivers use THIS LINK and try to stay up on the locations of scales. During my career, I have had to go out of my way more times than I would care to admit finding a scale.

Always go to the cloest scale after loading, or go cry somewhere else.

Your steer axle will be stamped on your sticker usually located at your door jam. I got my truck at a higher weight due rating to upgraded front axle and tires. Vin plate will show. Got DOT they looked at the Vin plate for steer axel limit.
