Okay very good. I suppose it could be the coax, I'm not really sure it is. I'm just basing it on the fact that if you remove the coax from a 4 watt CB radio and key the mic, the needle swings toward on the meter. I would think no coax attached would be worse than bad coax, and yet the needle moves.
I'm leaning towards a power issue possiblity. That Mirage is a very nice looking radio. I'm not sure the exact power it puts out. One website says 40 watts, another claims 60 watts. At any rate the power cables needs to be run to the batteries, with fuses installed close to the battery terminals for safety. That's the best way for a high power radio. If new coax and mounts don't fix it, I would probably call the CB shop back and let them know. Please let us know what you figured out the problem is.

Ok so I went to the truck today and hooked the radio up to my car battery and the meter was working fine. So I was thinking it must be something to do with the power running to it in the truck. I hooked it back up in the truck and tested the radio as I plugged everything into it before I put it back into the cubby slot for the radio. Hooked up power, meter was working, as I went plugging everything in the meter was still working. Put the radio into the cubby and and it quit working, took it back out and it still wasn’t working. Unhooked power to the radio and hooked it back up and it started working again. Put radio into cubby and it quit working, took it back out and unhooked and hooked up power back to it and it was working.put it in the cubby, quit working. Did the same thing over and over, had to unhook power and reconnect it every time to get the meter to work again.

Well the built in external cb speaker is right next to the meter once in the cubby. Speakers are magnetic aren’t they? But there’s how many of these t680s, surely that wouldn’t be causing the meter not to work?
I thought maybe it was working outside of the cubby because I was holding the radio with my hand, acting as a ground, but I did try just holding the plastic tray the radio sits in and not touch any metal and it still did the same thing. Also the meter continues to work as I slide the radio into the slot, but once I get say over 1/2 way 3/4 way in it stops working. (When it gets close to the external speaker) but again I doubt that would be causing it?Last edited: Mar 16, 2025

Did a google search about external speaker in t680 causing meter to not work. And the only thing that really came up was if the speaker in a cb radio has messed up wiring or is shorting out or something it could cause the Signal meter to not work. I’ll try unplugging the external speaker and putting the radio back into the cubby and see what it does. Again I doubt it’ll change anything but it’s worth a try, maybe that external speaker wiring is causing problems

The quickest way to test this theory would be to leave the external speaker unplugged and insert radio into the cubby again. If it works then you have the answer to the problem. I imagine you've probably already tried this. -
Oh yes it will... -
