Try to match tires as close as possible that run side by side . Even with same size tires , they may be different in diameter because of different manufacturers . Such as a Goodyear 11-22.5 may be 1/4" different than a 11-22.5 made by toyo. I use a suitable tape line ( cloth or fiberglass ,not steel it won't flex enough) and measure the circumference along the center of the tread, 3" differentence is acceptable but , I try to be lest than 2". FYI 11-22.5 is the same outside dia as 285/75-24.5 .

There is a lot of reading here and I might of missed something but the first question I have is?
With the trailer jacked up and a flexible tape measure around each tire what is the difference between the inner and outer tire diameter on that side of that particular axel?

That's basically what the guys are saying too. Even when I put that brand new tire on, it was a little bit shorter than the one next to it. I guess that caused it to get eaten from skipping and being dragged by the taller tire. I didn't realize they were so sensitive to it, but I won't be making that mistake again.

Usually the tire that is taller when side by side with a shorter one carries more of the load and wears faster then the smaller diameter tire?

I'd say since the smaller tire has less circumference, it's surface speed is slower, and it gets dragged. As far as load is concerned, that inner, larger tire definitely runs hotter than the little one.

Sliding/Spread axle drop deck trailer I run Chinese Sailun S637's at $300CA ($235US current) per tire and I haul an unmounted spare around in the neck. Change at any Love's for $60 in points and I'm laughing. The geometric on these axle configurations is murder on any tire. I do find if I try be do all 8 within a narrow time frame and can justify it, I get my best wear. Still, I've been running these for years 18/32's an 80mph speed rating and inflatable to 120psi. Economically they're the winner.

    No.
The shorter tire will wear the most.
The taller one will wear less.

I guess both tires can wear.
But as the above article states I have also seen accelerated crazy wear patterns on the larger tire in mismatched dual applications including high heat because it is carrying so much more of the load.

I run them on spread axle flat, and tandem hopper. Worth ever penny in the long run. Most guys are to cheap to invpest and maintain a quantity trailer tire. Out of 16 trailer tires, I have had 2 flat repairs in 6 years.

This is why I used to dig thru new caps for a mich/bridge for a road service call. Not all of the shop monkeys understood my reasoning.
