The days of just being able to pass a DOT physical and then you're in the truck are over. The insurance companies ultimately make the trucking company comply with their wishes by threating to / or raising the premiums the company pays. And if the company is "self insured" the hoops you gotta jump through are numerous. Whether skinny or fat-you still have to be able to climb into, on, under, and over the darn truck to do the job.
I hear that under the new CSA 2010 rules a driver who is overweight can be issued a citation for seat abuse.
WEL...you better not have a physical limitation

Yeah. And I heard on the CB that under CSA 2010 if you're ugly, you'll get a citation for mirror abuse, too.Texas-Nana, fancypants, rookietrucker and 1 other person Thank this.

###### driver! That's just funny there!

Texas-Nana and LindaLou Thank this. -
WTF!!
I believe I said "physical limitations". I never mentioned weight and that's all you ##*H**** want to grip about! How about the person who has something wrong with a limb? They can get in & out of a truck, drive the truck, & get in & out of the trailer with a little help of a HAND HOLD. But can't pass a companies BullS*** test!tellnol437 Thanks this. -
Well some of usdidn't say you were overweight we discussed various problems we each had and were encouraging you to keep trying.
HOWEVER, thanks for the lovely words.
LindaLou Thanks this. -
Last time I checked, getting into or on top of a trailer (flatbed) is a requirement for most company jobs. Therefore the company has every right to not hire you if you cannot fulfill this requirement. On the other hand if they do hire you knowing; about your disability, then under the ADA regulations, they have to make reasonable accommodations for you in the workplace.
I'm just sayin.
Texas-Nana, aladdin sane and Jimbo60 Thank this. -
Hey there sunshine!
I wasn't necassarily addressing you as much as I was addresssing the misinformation about the BMI stuff regarding the DOT and CSA2010.
The conversation just sort of drifted that way because obesity is a real issue in the trucking industry and with all of the misinformation out there, a lot of people are really worried about their situation.
Quite a few of the big companies have some version of a "work well" test, often called a "Human Performance Evaluation" or HPE. It is what it is. It is mostly to protect the companies from excessive workmans comp claims. It was said earlier; the days of getting a DOT medical card and jumping in a truck are mostly gone.
This is a tough business and, in many ways getting tougher by the day.
You know.... in all seriousness, if you can't pass the companies test, it's not the companies fault. You might want to find a company that doesn't have that type of testing. They're out there. Werner comes to mind.
Have a great day.

Color me your ##*H***, but the key words is "a little help". I see you are a student so maybe you're not entirely hip to the fact that there are THOUSANDS in trucking that believe women don't belong behind the wheel. That goes from the Bull Rack passing you to the one whose name is on the check. Get used to it. It's no secret that the physical suitably test were a way to discourage women, older hopefuls and those with a more delicate constitution .. If you have trouble climbing, what are you going to do with your first crappy tandems? There isn't always "a little help" available. The company has a reasonable expectation that a driver be physically self sufficient. There often is no help of any kind to be had. And if you are a potential team mate of a husband, boyfriend or guy still no excuse. You can easily find yourself on your own for any number of reasons.Texas-Nana and Jimbo60 Thank this.
