Is there a comprehensive list of all states limits or no?

If it was a road thing, then it would be legal on the interstate passing through, it is a revenue thing and came about when individual states could no longer enforce different length laws, and weight laws.

It used to be that some states would run a tape through your cab and give you a ticket because your mirrors were too wide, lots of states had something different so that noway you could run coast to coast and actually be legal.

You should go read a while at the dot pdf site... there are specifics, including some that should ring a bell from school, like how far you allowed from the interstate, how long the feds say you can be and what limits states can put on you and why. Also how if in a practice run it appears safe, the state only has 90 days to prove there case. If they dont the default is its automatically legal.

See many triples in the states? They are legal. Not everywhere.
Seen double 45's ? They are legal too. Not everywhere.

States can make their own rules, generally tighter than the feds but not more lax without a waiver.

Did a yahoo measure the mirrors 40 years ago... probably. And guys have handed that story down since it happened like an urban legend.

The rules might be a pain in the arse to you... but they are the rules and usually for reasons other than a cash grab. That sorta thing makes headlines and gets shut down real quick.

Popping you with a radar gun is much easier and doesnt take 2 cops to generate the revenue than trying to hang you with a tape measure.

We may be at an impasse of opinion vs facts but you can read all the rules at fhsa.gov if you are inclined.

LOL. Maybe if you were around years ago, you might just know a little something about them urban legends, and cash grabs.
Have you been around long enough to remember when every scale master AND dot that worked the anthony port of entry was FIRED , and had criminal charges brought against at least some of them. At least one had less than 3 months to go before he retired, lost it all. It took many many years before they shut that operation down.

It used to be every state had their quirks, States can have there laws restricting overall length, weight on secondary roads, but can't on interstates, now why do you you think they worry about the king pin length on the interstate, instead of secondary roads that need it.

Several states still made you buy your way across years after the feds outlawed it, New Mexico even had it in the paper, they would not quit charging it until some other revenue method could be come up with and implemented.

That’s useful as I am headed to Utah. Which apparently now also has a 41 foot limit. Luckily the POE on i80 is currently down.

I called the weigh station in Oklahoma, Dora weigh station. And the person there did not know if there was a limit.

Ive never seen Tennessee pulling tape on anything other than OSOW. I myself ran across Tennessee scales thus last winter in the 3rd to last hole.... Had to have it that far back cause nincompoop that loaded me way over loaded the rear of trailer... But it was preloaded for me and I pucked it up on a Saturday, so no way to get it reworked... So I just made the axles weigh good and ran it. I'll be honest I was sweating bullets when they ran me over the scales... It was very obvious I had my axles back WAY farther than was legal. But they just gave me the green light and away I went.

I'm with @starmac on this one. If it was the roads why did MI just remove all their kpra laws? It's not like they have done anything to the roads in the last 50 years.
