So I passed my class B written today (yea I know class A is probably what I'll end up needing) and going for my practical test next week. Im looking to get into straight trucks with a class b now (more local work) even though I wanna do OTR (family life wont allow it). I see all the "recruiting" companys are class A OTR....now Im willing to pay my dues and do some grunt work but theres gotta be someone out there that would train me and get me behind the wheel like that for a class B truck.....i hope. I have looked into expediting and talked to Panther and Express-1 (who wants 6 months OTR). I cant say I blame them....but where should I go? For what its worth i Live in Pensacola, FL....Im frustrated...dont have the money for a #### CDL School to nail me for $5k, so I grabbed the manual and studied my arse off for the next best thing. Im wanting to get into trucking but most everyone outside of OTR wants experience....how the hell do you get experience if nobody will give you a shot? I drove a 10,000 gallon tanker at the airport (which is well over 70,000 lbs) but didnt need a cdl since its not on public highways....so other than knowing how to handle a rig, thats pretty much useless....Not to mention, my driving record is not the best...no DUI or anything, but 2 accidents in the last 5 years (1 not at fault) and 3 violations in the last 3, so Im already assuiming im damaged goods from that alone.......uggg...I wanna do this guys....please steer me in the right direction
Well, Passed my Class B written today...

Sorry, guy.... just got back online (major electrical prob on house).
From what you tell me I would say that you are already going in the right direction. Do your class B and work it awhile until your circumstances better. Heck, you might just like it better.
OTR sucks right now for everybody. Too many folks jumping in thinking it's a cure-all for their present financial difficulties without a clear understanding of what the industry is these days. That benefits only the CDL mills.
Nope, get yer "B" and work it. Hang out here for awhile and read up. Plenty of time to get an "A" later when things shake out a bit and you'll have a better idea of what you'll be looking at. Actually, that gig at the airport sounds alot better than most of the OTR will get you lately. -
With a "B" you might try the local Teamsters Hall. They may be able to point you in hte right direction for employment. Such as beverage distribution, trash hauling, furniture delivery, etc.
Don't get down about 18 views and no reply's, many people won't, if they don't think they can add a meaningful response.Saddle Tramp and kickin chicken Thank this. -
ehh crap, I know....Just getting overly frustrated. The big dogs dont want experience, but to drive a little van they want 6 months to a year....I just need to find someone who will hire like the big dogs.

Are you trying all the local places? Open up the phonebook for the county you live in, call all trash collection, construction, sewage/septic service, gas well (if there are any in FL?), industrial cleaning companies, lumber yards, and food distributors in your area. I probably missed places on that list, but pretty much anywhere that would have a truck call. It's not easy but if you want a local job your going to have to knock on some doors and shakes some hands.

There are around 300 Non-Hazmat intrastate DOT #s alone registered in Escambia county. You can do a Safestat Carrier List search and refine the search by county. The vast majority of the carriers listed are one-man shows but there are enough with 5 or more power units to make it worth your while. Go to: https://ai.fmcsa.dot.gov and navigate around a bit. If you run into problems, PM me and I'll walk you through it. I'm off to bed now, but I'll check for PMs in the morning. Good luck!

Another reason other then the obvious for wanting experienced drivers is insurance. The big companies pay ridiculous amounts for ins for rookies that the smaller local guys probably can't afford to pay.

WTF is this...
apparently in your world people have nothing better to do then surf the forum all day long waiting impatiently to comment and kiss ### to every new thread that is started. -
