One thing I have not seen mentioned is how most old hands avoid this trap. This is done by experience and knowing the places around the US where you can stop BEFORE you get there. My last 20 or so years on the road I knew of a place to go park. It might be a cul-de-sac or along some city street where the local cops and the hookers would let you be. Having people that knew you would not tear up their property or drop a ton of trash would let you park. This is something I tell green drivers all the time. Keep your eyes OPEN when you are in new places to places to park. Also, ask! You would be surprised at how many of the people that work the Walmart DCs at the gates know where you can park. I have asked these people many times about parking. Driving is about the learning curve. Those that make it in this industry learn how to do this. So while I would expect a green driver to make a mistake with trip planning from time to time. An old hand in my book, should know better!

I wouldnt worry about it. I've done it twice. Both within the last year. 2 minutes one time & 10 minutes the last time. Both times getting home.

Last time, I was 2 miles from parking the truck to go home. In the city, red lights, 30 mph speed zones etc.

I got a Qualcomm message the next day that said. "you went over "X" amount of time on your 14". I just pushed the ok or accept or whatever button & went on about my business.

If they want/need to get huffy over 2 minutes or even 10 minutes in that situation, let'er rip.

You reschedule, don't grab a load so hot you have no room for play.
    farmerjohn64 Thanks this.

About that distance and about that same time frame is almost every load I've ever run.... I average 3700 miles every week to 10 days. 4253 miles in 7 days being my all time record... But I will be honest, I did have 1 HOS violation on that run... My 70 ran out 5 miles from home so went I went over my 70 by 7 mins. Last summer I ran between 14k and 15k miles a month, 3 months in a row.

My point is... I run hard, I like to run hard, my company likes that I run hard but does NOT require it. However, if I choose to run hard they compensate me for doing so by raising my cpm. I have only had 2 or 3 months in 3 years that my cpm was not above "base pay."

When frieght is hot at my company you had better be able to make tight schedules like I illustrated above... Or you either wont last long, or you will get the crap loads.
