If you have excessive black smoke, your DPF is also bad. EGR coolers cannot be cleaned. Soot build up is suppose to burn itself out. EGR coolers plug because they leak coolant, then you have to replace the element core. The engine can detect when EGR flow is insufficient and will log a code.

My mechanic said he will “clean out cooler”. Did parked regen which it required. Egr pressure code than popped up. Black smoke isn’t consistent but frequent. Truck had 290k miles. No leaks.
So bad EGR valve will not cause black smoke is what your saying?? Only bad DPF?? -
Where is the element core located?

Just posted few pics of my EGR valve. Is this cleanable than able to use again? Or damaged beyond repair??

That is normal and ok to reuse as long there is no cracking with the shaft and all the screws that hold the butterflies on are in good shape.

There's a couple of videos on YouTube showing how to remove the egr core..
