You can also make decent money on the dedicated accounts and see your house and spouse on a regular basis if a dedicated is available in your area.

The decision should be based on where you live, what type of driving you want, and what each of the training companies offer in your area, not the name on the truck. The correct answer will differ for each individual.

As an example I chose Werner because they had Target that offered the type of driving I wanted near my home. The other retail type dedicated in my area required a year or two experience to be considered.

The next closest, a state away, Target DC uses (I think) JB Hunt and US Xpress. I know some Target DC's use Swift. Dollar General, and most of the other major retail accounts are divided up among several carriers as well.

If you're interested in a regional or 48 state the same logic applies. Find out who has the big contracts in the area you want to work and check the hire areas for those companies. Don't forget to factor in per diem, benefits and taxes if you're comparing a 1099 check with a regular employer. Pet and rider policies can also be a deal breaker for some.

A little legwork and research up front can prevent a horrible mistake.

sounds like you look down your nose at the drivers at the terminals. readjust your view before you get a nose bleed. I spent 2 weeks at a hotel while the company debated wether to fix the truck or not. I said trans is not sounding good and getting hard to get into OD on the road two more weeks and the trans scattered I had been asking to stop in a terminal to get it replaced. then the company placed the two weeks spent at the hotel on me saying I should have got it fixed before that been saying for 2 weeks it needed to be replaced. guess that was their way to have me pay because they ignored my request to have it fixed before hand. personal I hatted going to the terminal for some reason I was held up for 2 to 3 days and my load would be stripped off(I know I was under paied for those miles) I had reason to dump on the company when at the terminal when your being treated like carp! and as to trainers making $1,00.00 a week guess what you turned some of those miles he/she got paied for, well yea I'll train if I got paied for their mile not caring they still got under paied. and it was .25 per mile back in the 80s you are being under paied at .35cpm . only a Wiener will defend Werner.

 

I am a new Werner hire. I am a little over half way through training. Reading all the horror stories about Werner did little for me except stress me out. Before I was assigned my first trainer I was expecting to get sodomized and turn up dead. I spent three weeks with my first trainer and then he had to go home for an extended period of time. The guy wasn't perfect but he wasn't horrible. At times our personalities clashed, I wanted to punch the guy in the teeth and set fire to everything. After the first week I stopped being a drama llama and the rest of our time together was uneventful. I am taking a few days off before going out with a new trainer. The next trainer might be a serial killer. I won't know until I meet him.

The worse thing I can say so far about Werner is it is a giant unfeeling impersonal corporate-machine. I thought it wouldn't bother me. There was a minor hiccup in my hiring process. I needed a simple form from my doctor faxed to Werner. For whatever reason Werner kept losing the fax. People that work in offices have to deal with such situations diplomatically all the time. Problem is I didn't have such experience so I didn't know who to call, what words to say or how to be assertive. Frustrated I just drove two hundred miles to my doctor and got the form myself. I scanned it at home and sent it to everyone at Werner I had ever interacted with. There were better ways to solve the problem but I didn't know.

I wonder how many of these Werner horror stories are a result of people that simply got lost in the corporate maze? I am finding out there are a lot of decent Werner drivers who will give you guidance if you need it.

 

I believe this has a lot to do with how people react/deal with being a number,a tooth on a cog in a machine.

 

A million miler and only getting .35/mi??..lol...that's a slap in the face...I just don't understand why some drivers settle for this disrespect like this...this is why Werner doesn't pay, they're NOT being forced to pay higher wages because drivers like this are settling for substandard wages when it comes especially to an experienced driver much less a million miler.

 

He was looking at the bigger picture - 3 weeks paid vacation, premium benefits, He lives in northern VT, outside most companies hiring area and Werner lets him bob tail home, usually 150 or so miles each way, and considers $75k a year acceptable. He wasn't willing to move or provide his own transportation from Southern New England for home time and this was the best deal he's found with those constraints. He does keep an eye out for a solo regional gig closer to home but hasn't found one that comes close to his current gross pay.

By complete coincidence he lives about 50 miles from where I'm originally from, although I live in SC now. Werner paid me during training to stay in a nearby motel while he took six days of home time. I rented a car and used the time to visit family and friends in the area.

Hey bub, I'm sure that if you talk to your dispatcher and tell him you have to have more or your gonna have to go some where else he or she will try to help you out .I also work there and they,ll work with you.its like that everywhere.they gave you your start.squeeky wheel gets the grease!say something to them.

yes, having same problem with Werner right now. a lot of down time and no pay. DM, fleet managers, DC managers are have been ignorant & rude. Time to Cut a Trail to another smaller company where I'm a person not a number!! Good Luck
