Werner is "self financed" if you will, just like they are self insured. They won't go bankrupt.. trust me... CL's got more stock and more money than he knows what to do with.
As for profits slipping, show me one company these days that isn't slipping closer and closer to the red. They are still making money, trust me. We got two dividends within a 30 day period in November and December (received in December and January).
Their stock is about $2.00 - $3.00 lower than it has been on the average, around $15 - $18. It peaked around $26.00 in August just before the market crashed. I think the lowest it hit was around $12.00. We aren't too concerned at this point. Because our opinion is that if he loses his job, then he can sell his stock and turn in his 401K. And yes we know he takes a hit, but if some on Congress have their way, they want to seize your 401K and "share the wealth" with everyone. And if Congress does decide to do that, then he said he will quit Werner and take his 401K. 18 years of stock and 401K is too much to lose at once.
As for the driver issue, they did lower their drivers by 500 in Dec 2008 and 500 in January 2009 from what I understand. They also I think lowered it an additional 1,000 previous to that during 2008 before the market crashed.
How they do it is look at the overall picture. They look at production, late loads, hours, log violations, tickets, at-fault accidents, on-time, OOS, etc. They are scraping the bottom of the barrel.
If you've been on an on-time person for a few years and suddenly you have three late loads in a row, I wouldn't worry about anything. Just don't make it a habit. If you have late loads due to road closures, accidents, construction, weather or maintenance (valid reasons that are beyond your control) then just make sure you send across the QComm "delayed by XXXX". If you are delayed by shipper or receiver ESPECIALLY make sure you not only report it over the QComm, but also call your dispatcher and let them know even if it is the weekend.AfterShock Thanks this. -
Has anyone heard of new layoffs or other "strange" cost cutting steps with these guys? I remember hearing once that they decided not to buy birthday cakes for office employees on their b-days anymore.

That's nothing new, its happened over the years. Certain bonuses have disappeared over the years. Mileage pay was reduced from .28 to .24.
Million mile certificates use to come on really nice paper with a gold seal, now they are printed from a regular inkjet printer. Safety plaques use to be about 8x10 size, now they are like 5x7.
But what irritates me, is that an employee can't even get a Werner calendar or things you need such as a 2009 Employee Handbook, or an updated fuel list. Who cares about birthday cakes when employees cant get the tools they really need. Like my other-half's tire story..... -
Hey guys, I am new to the forum. I just left Werner this week. Just to give you and idea of my 3 months experience with, I had 5 weeks of a net pay of 0.00. I had to live off pay advances and wasn't grossing enough to repay them.
I finally got out of the whole but was quickly sinking back...I quit, then my fleet manager talked me into giving him one more week and see if he could ramp up my miles...so I agreed. On friday morning I was in my truck ready roll as instructed. At 5:00pm I was still sitting...I finally told them to take this job and shove it!
Well I have a total of about 7 months experience...I worked at TMC and now with Werner and I am awaiting job approval with Transport America...lets hope my trucking experience gets better....

Werner Just closed the Portland, Oregon terminal this past Friday. Except for their fleet sales. No terminal in Portland
AfterShock, Baack and dragonmatrix Thank this. -
What a joke... forget trucking, until there are major reforms.
-
Actually, Portland began closing on January 2nd, officially it was shut down on last Friday. This isn't surprising, as it really wasn't much more than a drop yard. Portland was really only a "terminal" by name, as it was considered a satellite terminal and was rather small, with no permanent buildings. Its only been open for a couple years, at the most.AfterShock Thanks this.

i think the only thing they had in portland was fleet sales and safety, and maybe orientation, i dont know because ive never been to portland...as far as i am concerned they can burn down the Dallas terminal heh cess pool

in for what it is worth. portland was opened in 1999/2000. it had moved severial times, as with the drop yard. management had changed 8 times that i know of.. they had been toying with closing that term for years....
