Im a recent CDL school grad with no experience. I've applied to about a dozen companies. Most seem interested.
I spoke on the phone to a Werner rep and had some basic questions answered. I followed up with an email asking to confirm what we discussed. I recieved no reply. The same rep called me. I was offered OTR, regional, and a dedicated route. The dedicated route was appealing. She said it was about to open up. I asked if I would start training then get the route or wait for the route to open then train. As I suspected she said I would train before the route officially opens up. I asked if she would email me the information about the route and other items we discussed. She advised she was unable to do that as she feared the competition might somehow use that info. My thought is, "Bullcrap!" Why should Werner care if they are a "debt free Fortune 500 company"? If a company won't put in writing what they offer, I'm not taking the chance. I'm tempted to call back and ask her permission if I could record the call. I most likely won't...
However, my hats off to Conway. They email all the particulars.
I just returned an email to Roehl asking about the important stuff. Hopefully THEY reply and aren't deceitful.
    Thoughts, anybody?

Move on from Werner. Not only because they refuse to give you an offer in writing, but also because they are a bottom feeder company.

I applaud you for not being a naive idiot and actually asking for an offer in writing! Many rookies on here clearly dont have the spine or the intelligence to do this.

    Good luck wherever you go.

You dont have to go run over the road for some bottom feeder company right out of school. Regardless of what youve heard, some companies do hire rookies.

Well I suppose it all depends on the location you're in. How's VT for truckers?

A dedicated would be nice but not necessary. I thought it odd thay would offer such a run to me. That led me to request stuff in writing. That and the comment from this forum.
I have some interest from some local small companies that do OTR. Indeed, they hire noobs. I'm also interested in Conway but they require I start withing 30 days of CDL school... That doesn't leave me much time to tie up loose ends, research other companies, and give my employer a reasonable notice... we'll see...

VT is... ehhh. Swift, Schneider won't hire out of here. Most of the other big companies do. And we have a share of local companies. I applied to five of them. One wants me for hauling beer out of Canada but has to check with their insurance.

Well, good luck to you sir. I myself think dedicated runs are boring, I like to do something different everyday. I heard that Canada was a nightmare though ...

Fatback, You live 40 miles from a growing company that regularly hires new drivers. You won't get a gravy run, but a nice painless entry into the industry. You don't need to go drive for one of the big dysfunctional outfits, but you will have to "work up the ladder" What school did you attend?
