164 ie Nipton Road is currently restricted to truck traffic, because the rail road crossing on that road is falling apart (and if you were trying to mount the crossing in a step ... Id have my fingers and toes crossed). They are also doing road work in the mountain pass area on 15 and have the exit to nipton rd messed up constantly.

maybe someone else can add their .02 cents, but you can take the exit for Newberry springs which is about 20 miles east of barstow up to the 15. Should take some milage off, but dont know about how much time. And if you have over a 48ft trailer .. you will be off califona wonderufl truck route.

Bronc, when I was working security in Germany after 9-11 I was talking to soldiers that claimed Irwin was a post to try to get State side.:biggrin_2556: I found that odd, but they said the post was a hopping post now. When I was there they had the 27 man bay barracks. Open crappers with no stalls and a open shower. A NCO club, Officers club, EM club. Jack ### park where most grilled out and a bowling alley.

by 98 they had improved to the 2+2 barracks (shared latrine)
and still had an OC, NCO club and the outer limits (enlisted).....the PX would barely qualify as a nieghborhood one on a larger base

sad part was even the big and nasty chics had fun......way to few females on that base....LOL

We used to get in so much trouble out there. Of course that was when I was a little on the wild side. I ran with a crazy red neck from east KY and a full blood sioux Indian from SD. We was in the bar in barstow one time CC (california country) was a red neck bar. Guy came up to holybear and asked him if he was hawaian? Said nope, sioux indian, you know the kind that kicked custur's ***:biggrin_2559:

We used to go to the rail head in yuma and go to the marine's club and dance with their women for entertainment...:biggrin_2559:

Well I called them today. I didn't know that the main entrance was exit 189... Hell, that's Barstow. The folks in Ft. Stewart told me that the entrance was in Baker. I'm staying on 40...

    lol

you take that exit then go about 25 more miles before you see the gate

if you take xt 195 (yermo), there a restuarant called jenny rose....used to have good food and some parking...that road will also lead you to irwin road (the one that takes you to the base)
