So I was offered an Ohio flex position through west side transport. Here are a few things that bother me.
1. I already have CDL, but no otr experience and because of COVID, I will be starting solo from the get go. No trainer, nothing. Is this common for companies now because of COVID?
2. I have a couple years of yard dog experience but, when it comes to dealing with dispatch, brokers, etc. I’m pretty new.
On the flip side.
I do like that I won’t have a trainer. I feel like anytime someone is watching over me, I speed up, or rush for no reason. I honestly just don’t want to share a truck with someone I don’t know, unless it’s the hot mamma from down the street.
Anyone have any experiences with west side transport? Why did you stay? Why did you leave? I just want to put in the grind my first year. Pay is important, home time is important, but getting experience and seat time is probably the most important.
West Side Transport- rookie year, no training

@DoubleO7 used to work there.
You lucked out; already know how to back trailers and don't have to deal with a trainer. -
buckmanmike Thanks this.

I lucked out with my first job out of cdl school. My trainer was a rookie also. Both of us had just gotten out of the military and both of us were laid back and never been gung-ho.Speed_Drums and PKNation Thank this. -
The co is concerned with you, the driver, being able to drive the truck safely. Your yard dog experience counts for a lot. You can hook up, un hook, back up etc. However you will drive faster on the highway than you do in the parking lot at the DC center, right ? Your friendly dispatcher will guide you thru the rest including fueling, and shippers/consignees paperwork, logging, all of it. Have fun !
Northern Nomad, DoubleO7 and Chinatown Thank this. -

Honestly, I think a trainer would be a good thing. Remember. Trying to change lanes with a truck is ALOT different than doing it with a car. Plus you don't have curbs on a yard. If it was me, I would actually want some OTR time with a trainer.

P.S. I know that came off kinda ####y....Last edited: Feb 22, 2021

I currently know a few West Side drivers I speak with on the phone. I might be able to get some current info, or steer one of them here.
Chinatown, you have a good memory!! I was inactive here for a long time.Speed_Drums and Chinatown Thank this. -
