    Oops, wrong link, same area, same outcome. This one happened this morning. I corrected the link. I94 is a bad highway for accidents!

    I live in SW Michigan and I try my best to avoid I-94. People (trucks and 4-wheelers) just drive too fast on that road. That stretch from U.S. 131 to I-69 should be widened to three lanes. More than one time coming home from the south or east, I've elected to drive 80/90 and exit at U.S. 131 north to where I live between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. It costs me a few extra bucks and 30 minutes or so but the savings in aggravation is worth it. Another plus...that route lets me avoid the scales in Grass Lake on 94 and the one just inside MI on 69.

    Condolences to the drivers family.

    The article had 35 facebook 'likes' when I read it. Doesn't it seem wrong to 'like' such a tragic story?

    If that's the way you interpret them. Could mean "I like being informed of this".

    Well, you wouldn't wonder why if you knew Michigan (and TX) could not more wrongly believe the 85th percentile method of setting speed limits consists of but 1 criterion; the 85th percentile speed, so it's virtually impossible to be cited for speeding unless you're driving like you're out of your ever lovin' mind.

    In fact, the criteria includes:

    • Roadway design elements, including:
      • Road function/purpose;
      • Lane and shoulder width;
      • Horizontal and vertical curves;
      • Available sight distances;
      • Driveways with restricted visibility and other roadside developments;
      • High driveway density;
      • Rural residential or developed areas; and
      • Paved or improved shoulders.
    • Pavement conditions; and
    • Crash frequency and severity.
    http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/speedmgt/ref_mats/fhwasa12004/

    But, no matter what, the fundamental basis of the 85th percentile method has become a gross and obviously nonsensical non sequitur: "Driving behavior is an extension of social attitude, and the majority of drivers respond in a safe and reasonable manner as demonstrated by their consistently favorable driving records."

    Once upon a time maybe that was true, but the vast majority of rank and file law enforcement efforts, what is left of them due to budget cuts, is focused on the War On Drugs, so the only way someone's driving record can be blemished is by crashing... then sticking around. If they manage to escape, they can't be charged. If 2 people occupy a crashing vehicle they can each point to the other as the operator, and thereby no one is cited for the "failure to maintain control".

    Few things seem to incite the criminal nature of the human being better than motor vehicle operation.

    I can personally attest to exit 60 being especially bad in ice or snow - coming back home late one night a pickup spun out in front of my little car and ended up against the guard cable in the middle. My car slid aling the slope on the other side, finally doing a 360° gentle rollover, landing back on its wheels. Son got a small cut on his eyebrow and I had a pulled back muscle. Needless to say, I don't travel in the winter anymore.

    Exit 66 and the curves near exit 78 are also very bad.
